GEoRGE W. HOWELL, or covrNGToN, KENTUCKY,
PIPE CUT-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,939, dated October 25, 1904. Application filed January 11, 1904-. Serial No. 188,502- (N0 model-l To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 00V- ington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Out-Offs, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to a cistern-pipe cutoff; and it consists of means for locking the cutoff valve in either desired position.
The object of my invention is to provide a weighted locking device {for holding the cutoff in either the closed or open position, which will prevent accidental displacement and also indicate the position of the cut-off valve.
The features of my invention are more fully setforth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, inwhich- .Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a central vertical section showing the lock in the central position, shown indotted lines, Fig. 1.
A represents the collar of the pipe, which is connected to the eaves spout-pipe.
' B represents a branch-pipe elbow, which is connected, say, to the pipe leading to the cistern.
O represents the other elbow branch, lead- D represents the cut-off valve, which is centrally supported upon pivot 64 and the axial crank-arm E. This valve is of the usual form and shape to close either branch pipe, according to the direction in which it is turned. The axial arm E is bent in the form shown in Fig. 3, and upon its upper end is pivoted a Weighted latch G, having notches 6 c.
Hrepresents a segmental catch of hollow' and truncated form. The catch is shown of a segmental hollow form, the top portion serving to prevent this latch from turning or dropping into the engaging position until it is moved past the segment, when the weight automatic- .ally causes it to engage the latch.
As shown in Fig. l,the notch 0 is hooked over one edge of the hollow catch. The weight of the latch carries itinto locking engagement and prevents accidental displacement of the axial lever and valvehinged thereon. When cistern branch will be open. It will be ob-' served that the position of the cut-off valve is always indicated by the position of the This releases weighted latch. The form of the lockingcatch may be variously modified and still retain all the advantages of the weighted latch.-
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a cut-off having two branch pipes, leading from a common pipe, a
cut-off Valve, .pivotally supported therein, a
rigid crank-arm connected to said valve and bent to form an'axial support, a weighted and reversible latch pivoted on said axial armand provided with notches on each side of the pivot, catches on each-side of the cut-off, with which the lock is selectively engaged, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a cistern branch cut-off, a valve, therein, one of said pivotsbeing extended to form a crank-arm and a weighted latch provided with catch engagements centrally pivoted on the free outer end of'the crank-arm,
substantially as described.
3. In combination with a branch cistern cut-ofi", acut-ofi" valve centrally pivoted there.- in, a crank-arm forming one of the axes of the valve, a weighted latch pivotally supported on the end of the crank-arm, and a segmental pivotally supported centrally catch, spanning the axis of the valve, secured I to the outside of the cut-off, and means for locking the crank-armwith said catch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE W.- HOWELL. Witnesses:
OLIVER B. KAIsER, LUIsE BECK.
