Letters'Patent No, 77,275, dated April 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT l1u 'ras MANUrAcTU'R-E or rncnmeroa STEAM-ENGINES..
alle Metals attratta mitm what ittica :tu making gaat nf its ramt Y TO iALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN; v
Be it known that I, JAMES GLANDING, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Packing for Steam-Engines, 8vo.; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of y the same.
vMy invention consists of a packing, composed of fibrous strands, into which melted paraine or stearine, or other equivalent lubricant, with 'or without soapstone,is introduced, during the plaitin'g o'f the strands together, as described hereafter, so that the fibres may be thoroughly impregnated with the said lubricant.
In order to enable others to practise my invention, vI-w-ill -now proceed to describe the manner of carrying it into eli'ect, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, whichforms a part of this specification, and the iigure in which represents the packing as it appears during the process of its manufacture..
A represents a' mass of twisted iibrous strands braided or plaited ltoge'theigso as to form a solid mass of twisted fibres oi hemp, jute, cotton, or othervequivalent fabric. ff l l The braid, at or near pointwhere the different strands are interloke'd, passes through an opening in 'a plate, X, by means of whichthe strands are condensed and the braid rendered uniform in thickness ;I and above the said plate, in a line with the 'centreof the said opening, is a nozzle, fr, through which iiows melted paraine or stearine, o r a mixture of paraiine and soapstone, or any other lubricating-material or composition, the lubricant being thus introduced to the strands at a point where'they are` being united, vso as to thoroughly saturate them, and fill the interstices between the, bres,.the edge of the opening in 'the plate X spreading 'any of the lubricant which may escape from betweenothe strands evenly over the outer-,surface of the braid, as the latter` descends.
Lubricating-materials have heretofore been applied to packings either bypassing the latter, after the strands vcomposing-the'same have been combined, through the lubricant, or by passing .the strands Separately through the lubricant before combining them. I
It will be seen that, by the above-described process, the.1ubricant is 'introduced among the strands during the process .of p laiting them together, and that, as any subsequent operation is' unnecessary, the expense of manufacturing the packing 'is greatly reduced.
I claim a's my invention, and .desire to secure'by Letters'Patent- The process', herein described, of applying'lubricating-material to packing, that is to say, introducing the' material among4 the fibrous strands during the plaiting of the latter togethenand atthe point where they are being united, substantially as specified. p
Intestimony whereof,- I havesigned my name to this sp ecification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAS. GLANDING.
