PATENT OFFICE.
PUMP-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,666, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed April 8, 1904. Serial No. 202,224. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, LESTER M. RIoH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cedar Rapids, county of Linn, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Caps, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicl Figure 1 is aside elevation of the upper part of an ordinary lift-pump provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, enlarged, taken through the pump-cap proper; Fig. 3, a vertical section taken at right angles to the line on which Fig. 2 is taken. Fig. A is a bottom of a cap. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the supplemental sliding cap.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective device for keeping covered the hole or slot in the pump-cap in which the plunger-rod vibrates; and it consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in. the claim appended' Referring to the drawings by letters, a designates the pump-cap proper, whichis adapted to be attached to the upper end of the pumpcylinder in any suitable manner. At one edge of the cap is formed integral with it. the standard 6, in the upper bifurcated end of which is pivotally mounted the usual operating-lever 0, whose shorter arm is pivotally connected, as usual, to the plunger-rod cl. An integral extension of the standard Z) is eX- tended across the top of the pump-cap to form a rib e, and through this rib andthe top of the.
pump-cap is formed a slot f, which permits the plunger-rod to vibrate as it is vertically reciprocated.
Formed integral with the side edges of the rib e are flanges g, and'engaging under these flanges are the lugs h of a sliding supplemental cap 1:, said lugs being curved inward under the flanges g, so as to prevent the capz' from being lifted oif the rib. This cap is provided with a hole j, which nicely fits the plunger-rod.
It will be observed that as the plunger-rod vibrates the cap 2' will slide back and forth on the rib and always keep the slot f closed, thereby preventing foreign substances that would injure the Valve of the plunger falling into the pump-cylinder. To prevent the cap from sticking to the upper flat surface of the guide-rib during frosty Weather, its under surface is provided with a series of lugs is, which bear and slide upon said upper flat face of the rib 'on each-side of the slot f. These support-. ing-lugs is are an important feature, as without them the cap would freeze to the supporting-rib in frosty weather and would either be broken or would bend the plunger-rod.
By forming the guide rib or way as an extension of the standard it will be observed that not only will the guide-rib be in perfect alinement with the plane of movement of the lever, but also will serve to strengthen the cap at the point where the slot f would otherwise weaken it.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a pump-cap and a standard, said pump-cap being provided with a slotted guide-rib, a lever and a plunger-rod, and a sliding cap-plate mounted on the rib and provided with a hole for the plunger-rod coincident with the slot in the guide-rib and on its under side with a series of separated bearing-lugs resting upon the upper side of said guide-rib and serving to support the cap-plate above said surface, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of April, 1904.
LESTER M. RICH.
