DOOR-LOCKING MECHANISM FOR ELEVATORS.
' SI'ECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,601, dated September 20, 1904.
' i Application filed July 14, 1903; Serial No. 166,481. (No model.)
To all whom it may onoern:
7 Be it known that I, J om: S. MnoKLa, a citizenof the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements'in Door-Locking Mechanism for Elevators, of which thebfollowing is aspeci- The object of my invention is to make a reversible door-lock for the landing-doors of elevators, so .that the mechanism can I be used either for-right or left handed doors. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in whic'h r 5 vator-landing door-locking mechanism. Fig.
isa section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3'
Figure 1 is a face view of my improvedele- 1s a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring-lock. Fig.
5 1s a perspective view of the locking-lever for the plunger carried by the elevator-car, and Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view showing the plunger and locking mechanism in position.
g A is a-plate, preferably made in a single casting, having a central depression a, in which rests a spring-actuated locking-lever B. This -lever is pivoted to the plate-by a pin I), passing through lugs a on the plate A,v and this lever extends. under a strap (f at the ,upper end of the plate, the strap in the present instance being cast integral with the plate.
C is a spring which iscoiled around the pivot-pint and extends under the lever B, as shown, so as to force the-lever out" against the strap a and when in this position the lever locks the landing-door ofthe elevator and the threaded in'thc present i.
to receive a pivot-pin D. "This pin forms the jtrolling mechanismon the car when the land- .ing-door is open.
door can only be released by operatinga plunger 'S .on the car.
On each side of the plate are orifices d, screw-' lstance and adapted pivot for the lever E, which looks the plunger S on the car to the; elevator-well at the landing and prevents thev movement of the conlhis lever has three arms 1n the present'instance, e e a, the arms a beby the elevator-car.
' ing'a weight for shifting the lever when it is not held in position by the landing-door. The landing-door acts upon the arm a and holds it against the stop on the plate A; but as soon as the door is shifted the weight causes the lever to swing on its pivot and to strike the stop This brings the arm I: back of aflange a on the plunger S on the car'and locks the plun shifted. It will be noticed in referring to Fig. that the arm e of the lever E has two members, so that it can be turned to be used on either the right or left hand side of the plate A. It will therefore be seen by the abovedescribed mechanism that only one setof castings need be carried in stock and the plate can be used on a door opening either at the right or left hand side.
In the in vcrted view, Fig. 6, I have shown the plate A having a spring-lever in combination with the plunger S, which is carried to a guide-plate T, secured to the under side of the car, and is actuated through lever mechanism connected to the starting and stopping gearing on the car. Carried by this plunger is a centrally-situated wheel 8, mounted on the spindle s. This wheel is preferably faced with some yielding material, such as rubber. On each side of the plunger are flanges u u, which are so proportioned that they will be engaged by the'arm e of the three-armed lever E, which can be pivoted on either side of the plunger A. By arranging the plunger with a double flange it can be used either inconnection with a right-hand or left-hand opening door. I claim as my invention 1. The combination in an elevator-door look,
This plunger is adapted ger, preventing the operating mechanism being of a plate, a central door-locking lever 'piv I oted thereto, saidplate having an orifice on each side of the center, a pivot-pin fitting either orifice, and a lever for locking the operating mechanism on the car and mounted on the pin, substantially as described.
2. The combination in an elevator-door lock, of a plate, a central door-locking lever pivoted thereto, said plate having an orifice on each side of its center, a pivot-pin fitting dependent spring either orifice, and a locking-lever mounted on the pin and having three arms, one arm being a weight, the second arm being actuated by the door and the third arm locking the mechanism carried by the car so as to lock the operating mechanism when the car is at a landing and the door open, substantially as described.
3. The combination in an elevator-door lock, of a plate secured to the wall of the elevatorwell, a lever pivoted to the plate, and an inextending under the lever and arranged to hold it normally away from the plate and inloeking position so as to lock the landing-door when closed, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the plate having a central recess, a strap extending over the recess, and lugs, a locking-lever pivoted to the lugs and passing under the strap, and a spring extending under the lever tending to keep it pressed out against the strap, substantially as described.
5. The combination in an elevator-door lock, ofa plate, a three-armed locking-lever pivoted to the plate, one arm of said lever being in the path of the door, the other arm being weighted and the third arm arranged to engage mechanism on a car and having two mem bers so that the lever can be used in connection with either a right or left handed door, substantially as described. a
6. The combination of a plate having a central. recess, a strap extending over the recess at its upper end, and lugs at its lower-end, a lever pivoted to the lugs and extending under the strap, a spring for forcing the lever out to be locked, said plate having two orifices one on each side of the center, a pivot-pin fitting either orifice, a three-armed lever arranged to swing on the pivot, one arm being in the path of the landing-door, the other arm being in the form of a arm being double and arranged to lock the controlling mechanism on the car, said plate having stops on each side of the center of the plate for controlling the movement of the lever, substantially as described.
7. The combination of the plate secured to the wall of an elevator-well, a spring-lever pivoted to the plate, a locking-lever for the plunger arranged to be mounted on either side of the plate, a car, a plunger carried by the car, and means for actuating the plunger, said plunger having acentrally-located wheel to act upon the spring-lever and having a flange on each side with which the lever hung to the plate can engage when the door is open, substantially as described.
8. The combination in an elevator-door lock,
of a plate, a door-locking lever, means on the car for actuating said lever, and a lockinglever pivoted to'the plate and operated by the door, one arm of said lever having two members so that the lever can be reversed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed. my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
