GEORGE e. HOO-D L'END JOHN D. KELLY. OE PROVIDENCE, MODE ISLAND.l
Letters Patent-No. 77,041, dated Apr-1.21, 1868,
IMPEOVED -WAsHINe-EAOHINE.
v'ro ALL WHOM IrMAv. OON'OERN: K
Be it known that we, .GEORGE-G. Hoon and JOHN D. KELLY, oi Providence, in th'e eountyof Providence,
and State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and' improved Washing-Machine; and we do hereby declare' that the following is a full, clear, and exact description -thereof, which 'will enable others skilled inthe art to `makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l'represents a longitudinal sectional elevation 'of our improved washing-machine.; Figure 2 is ahplan or top view f the same. Figure 3 is a detail plan view, on an enlarged scale, of the'bearing of oui' drum. Figure 4 is a vertical section o'f the same, the plane ofsectien being indicated by theyline w x, g. Similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates `to aA new washing-machine, of that class in which the articles to be washed arev manipulated between corrugated rollers, andgthe invention'consists, first, in the general arrangementof the machine, in which, below a revolving corrugated drum, a frame, carrying a series of horizontal corrugated rollers,
is arranged, the frame being held up against thedrum by means of springs. The drum having fixed bearings,
andthe rollers beneath itbeing elastic, owing to the yielding frame in which they are held, the machine will be adaptable for washing articles o f any thickness, which`will, by means of the springs, be pressed between the drum and rollers, and rubbed by the rotating or oscillating motion of the same. The invention also oonsists -in anew manner of arranging the bearings for the drum. The same are in a vz'zed plate, the covers being formed by means of blocks that are dove-tailed int'o the plate, and tapering towards one end, so that they are securely held in the plate, and .can still, 'if desired, be easily removed therefrom, if it is desired to remove the drum.
A, in the drawing, represents a suds-box, of rectangular or other suitable shape, made of wood or other Asuitable material, and supported by suitable posts or uprights, B B. C is a frame, eonsisting'o'f horizontal hars, andmadeof such size that it will t snugly into the suds-box, and can fre'elv be moved up vand down in the same. v v
The frame C rests upon suitable springs D D, which, are arranged upon the bottom of the suds-box, the
springs holding the frame up against a corrugated or otherwiseA roughened drum, E, which is mounted on a.
shaft, F, thathas its bearings inthe sides of' the suds-box. i l
Gr G are horizontal rollers, having their bearings in the frame C, belw lthe drum'E, asshown.
The garments lto be washed are fed betweeuthe rollers G and the vdrum E, and are, by oscillating or rotating the drum by suitable mechanism, thoroughlyl agitated. i
The shaft,F, 'of the drum, vhas its bearings in a metal plate, H, which is fastened upon the edges of the side-boards of the suds-box, bymeans of screws, or otherwise, the shaft'lying in a semicircular depression,
arranged in the plate H. The covering of the bearings is formed' by a dove-tailed tapering block, I, which is ltted into a corresponding slot of the plate II, as shown in gs. 3 and 4. Owing to the double tapering form ofthe bleek I, the same will be rmly retained in its place, and will notbc apt to work loose. By means 'of a.
pin, a, it may still be more firmly held.
When the .pin is removed, the block I can be easily removed, whereby the taking out of the shaft F and.,l drum E, for cleaning and repairing purposes, is facilitated. The block I maybe perforated, as shown, tefaciflir tate the lubricating of the bearings.
We claim as new, and desire ,to secure by Letters Patentn The curved frame C, carrying the corrugated rollers G, when provided with the guilde-pins, fitting into the spiral springs D, in the four corners of the box, in lcombination with the tub A, tapering block I, plate H, drum E, and shaft F, as herein shown and described.'
' GEORGE Gr. HOOD,
JOHN D. KELLY.
