Description

i divided tate MARTIN R. LEMMAN, OF WESSON, MISSISSIPPI.
Letters Patent No. 86,236, dated Janna/ry 26, 1869.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred 'to in these Letters Patent and making part ofi-.heA same,
To all whom it aua/y concern v Be it known that I, MARTIN R. LEMMAN, of Wesson, in the county of Oopiah, and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved Washing and Rinsing- Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being Vhad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved washing and rinsing-machine.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new washing-machine, in which the clothes to be washed are not in the least injnred, and in which they are well tossed and agitated, so as to be quickly washed.
The invention consists of an endless Slat-band, suspended from a roller which is hung eccentrically, so that the clothes which are placed into the band are well turned and tossed, not only by the eccentric Inotion of the roller, but also-by the slats, which are of different thicknesses.
The lower part of the band is immersed in suds, so that the clothes will also be steeped therein.
A represents a suds-box, of suitable size and form.
-From it project two upright posts, B B, in which are the bearings of an eccentric-roller, C, that can be turned by means of a crank-handle, a, shown in fig. l.
Around the roller C is laid, and from it is suspended, an endless slatbe1t, D, which consists of a series of horizontal slats, b b, that are connected by bands or belts c c.
The lower end of the slat-belt hangs into the sudsbox, and is immersed in suds contained therein.
The roller C has teeth, fl d, by means of which it turns the belt.
The clothes to be washed are placed into the belt tion to the roller, so as to constantly change the -position of the articles in the carrier I).
In this 'machine the clothes are quickly washed, and not in the least injured,
I am aware that rubbing and vertically-reciprocating motions have been accomplished by means of a pivoted lever, and this I do not claim, but confine myself to the method described for producing these motions, that is to say- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti Producing thel rubbing and vertically-reciprocating motion simultaneously, by means of the eccentrica-Hypivoted disk C and the endless apron D, provided with the rubbing-slats, as herein shown and described.
MARTIN It. LEMMAN.
