To ALL- WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be 'it known that I, DAVID C. DnnINeE'R, of Russellville,in'the'connty of Brown, and State of Ohio,"have inventcdanew and improved Tobacco-HandTying Machine; and I do hereby declare thatthe following yis a fell, clear, and lenactv description of the construction and operation of Vthe same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawings, makng'a part of this specication, in which'- I Figure l'is aside elevation.
Figure '2 is a top view.
Figure Sie an end elevation.
Figure 4-is' a cross-sectionl of the cylinder This invention is a sinnple,`cheap, and easily-operated machine fortyin'g rolls or hands of tobacco, whereby "the oporation'is greatly facilitated.
. In thedrawings, A represents a tubularcylinder, with an ,expanded month, and lying horizontally-on the beds E E', supported by the frame F-of the machine, 'and provided with bearings, H H, in which the cylinder can be rotated by meansf gear-wheels a I, operated in vone direction bye treadle, M, and in the other by a weight,.U, atta'ched te a'cord, u. The bed, E, has'a depression, A', in its surface, at theend4 of thev bore oii theA cylinder, and forming afcontinuation of its lower half, and' terminating in a vertical guard, T. B is a fork, capable of being pressed through the bore of the cylinder, by means of the vbent vlever D, acting against its head, B', and, when the lever is removed, resuming its position, as shown in iig, 4, by means of .a spring, b.
The' fork and spring are attached only tothe cylinder, and revolve 'with it when pressed down far enough -to clear the guard C, that encloses the cylinder at this point. When liberated, the head of the' fork enters ay recess in the 'guard C, as secni in fig. 4, and prevents the cylinder from rotating'. A slot, s, 'extends from one end of .the cylinder to the other.
' Gr is a plate'or block, attached to a frame that slides up and down between 'guide-posts, GG. -I The .block G can be depressed by means of a lever, Q, having a handle, S, and, when not held downjby force applied atS, is kept in the position shown in fig. 1 by means of n spring, G. The block rises and Vfalls-directly over the depressioni A in the bed E.' I ts under side is made concave, so that, when lowered upon' the bed Ez'the space i between the depression A andthe under 'sidcof the block .forms .a'ccntinnation of ticibore' 'of the cylinder A i In connection with the apparatus above described, an arm, l), is hinged under the table o r frame F, and
proi'ded withfa'barbed'hook, Q, withf sharp-pointedhead. When the arm -i`s raised, the-hook is thrown up `directlyinl front of the expanded end of the cylinder. .When depressed, the hodk falls entirelybe'lon` the cylins der. 'The' hook 'is usually kept in the position shown in fig. '1, by means of afspring, p.' Atreadle, 1`,i
:employed torraise the hook ithcn necessnry,.\vhijch it does by means vof4 a cord, 1i, passing over a pulley, n', and 'Attached' to tlxee'nd 'of the arm' P. g
The operation o f a machine tlius constructed is as follows 1' The.' tobacco is rolled up by hand in a bunch flageenough to-iill'tlicborc of the cylindr, and is'then introduced into the expanded endy of the'cylinder, and' thrust in u'ntil -the e nd of the -roll comes against the guard T- By means'oi' the lever D, the fork B is thon caused to'p'enetratcamOngthetObneco, and holdit securely i'n position while the cylinder is revoliiing. The operator then takes a lea`.c ifl tobacco, and, doubling the point down, places it over the end of thevroll, near the 'guard'. l, and`nnder the block G.' Having'done this, he presses his handuponth-e lever S 0, bringing the block G down justenough to holdthefwrapper, in -order to start it around the roll-when the `cylinder colmrnences to revolve. vHe then presses his foot upon the treadle M, which is so connected with thecylinder that it causes the. 'letter t'o make twocomplete revolutions inA its bearings, drawing the wrapper tightly around the leaves inthe cylinder, and forming a'nent band to thcrbll. Having dorrev this, h c" takes the loose end of the wrapper in his left vhrrnd, and draws -it along vto the right,'through the slot e, forcing the roll ontV offthe cylinder. When it ...reaches the proper p oint, he stopsit directlyover thehook Q, and places his {o ot 'on treadle N,`\\hich forces the' sharp-pp intc'dhead of the hook up through therolll He then places the end of ,the wrapper Which-he heldY portiereny 'mom i 2 in his left hond under' the hook or barb of the instrument Q, and releases the treadle, when the spring 2J consce the hook to resume its original position, pulling the end of the leaf through theroll :is it returns', and seaux-olv tying the band around the tobacco. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cylinder A, having the slot s, and the expanded end, in combination with the bed E and the gmini .T, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. The fork B, when used in connection with a. rotating cylinder, A, substantially as and for the purposes `set forth. l
3; The block G, When used in combination with a revolving cylinder, und-when provided with a lever und spring, or their equivalents, by which `it cnn be raised o1' lowered, substantially ns and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the 'cylinder A, gear-wheels@ I, cord u, weight U, and txeadle M, substantially :is and for the purposes specified.
5. The hook Q, in combination with the cylinder A, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
