Description

No. 769,414. PATENTED SEPT. 6, 1904` G. SIMMONS.
SPLIT PULLEY.
AAAAAAAAA oN NLED 0012.19, 1903.
Patented September 6, 1904.
GUY SIMMONS, OF COLUMBUS, OlllO.
SPLIT PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,414, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed October 19, 1903. Serial Noi 177,675. lNo model.` i
To nl] 71.71.0121/ if 711//17/ concerne t'orin to said tongue or projection. Each sec- Beitknown that LG'UYSIMMONS, acitizen oi' l tion ot' the pulley has a cross-piece B, adaptthe United States, residing at Columbus, in thc count-y ot' Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Pulleys; and 1 do declare the followingto be a lull, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled i in the ai't to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters ot' reference niai'ked thereon, which form a part et' this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in split pulleys and comprises means whereby the two sections of the wheel may be. easily and quickly put together and piece of a section ot' the pulley, whereby the taken apart; and it consists specilically in the provision ot hooked rods having' threaded ends to be eng'aged by nuts and which pass through cross-pieces upon the sections of the pulley and in the provision et' cams which engag'e the hooked ends ot said i'ods and are adapted to di'aw the two sections taut as said cams are tui'ned `frictionally against the sections ot' the pulley.
The invention consists in various details ot' construction and in combinations and arrangements ot' parts, which will be hereinafter t'ully described and then specilically detined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying di'awing's, which, with the letters ot reference marked thereon, form a part ot' this application, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved pulley. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the pulley. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through portions ot' the sections, and Fig. et is a detail view ot' one ot' the rods upon which a cam member is adapted to be mounted.
Reference now being had to the details otl the drawings by letter, A and A designate two complemental sections ot' the pulley, one end ot' each ot' which sections has a tongue or slightly-j)rejecting portion a, which is adapted to enter a recess z/ in the other end ot' each adjacent section ot' the pulley, said recess or depression being of such a shape as to coned to engage a shat't, and registering' apertures O are `t'oriiied through said cross-pieces and are provided t'or the reception oi the rods 1), each ot' which has an angled end 1) and a straight threaded end F tor the reception of tightening-nuts 1C. A Cain-lever l, having an aperture K, is adapted to engage each hooked end ot' the rod, and interposed between eacli cam member and the adjacent cross-piece ot' the pulley-section is a washer T, against which the cam is thrown in order to hold the two sections i'rictionally together. ln applying t-lie rods to the pulley-sections 1 prefer to arrange thc rods in reverse oi'dei', one cam-lever bearing against each crosstwo sections may be securely clamped together. By reason of the nuts mounted upon the threaded ends ot' the rods it will be noted that the two sections may be rea lily adjusted, so that means is provided tor taking up any shrinkage or variation in the cams of the pulley, and it will further be noted that by the provision ot' a pulley embodying the Jfeatures ot' my invention the saine may be easily and quickly applied to and removed Vfrom a sha't't.
lVhile Vl have shown a particular construction ot' pulley embodying the features otl my invention, it will be understood that 1 may make alterations, it' desired, in the details ot' construction ot' the same without in any way departing vfrom the spii'it et' the invention.
[laying thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iis-- A split pulley, comprising two coinpleinental sections having tongue-and-groove connections, cross -pieces having contracted ends jointed into the sections adjacent to the ends thereof, said cross-pieces having' their widened central portions concaved and designed to i'eceive a shaft to which the pulley is adapted to be clamped, angled rods having threaded ends passing' through registering apertures in said crosspieces, adjacent to the inai'ginal ends ot' said recesses, a nut mounted upon the threaded end of each rod, a cam member pivotally mounted upon the angled end of each of said rods, the free end of each of said cam members being` inclined and havingeach a projection which is adapted to Contact with one of said cross-pieces, whereby said cam members may be held parallel With the Crosspieees, when in clamping relation, as set forth.
In testimony Whereotl I hereunto aiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
