AUTOMATIC SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,386, dated September 6, 1904.

Beitknown that I, ALFimD JoHNsoN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sash-Locks, of which the followingis a speciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appel'- tains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved lock for the sashes of windows whereby the sashes will be securely locked together when in a closed position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying' drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a front view of a window the sashes of which are provided with my improved lock; Fig. E2, a section of a part of the upper sash; Fig'. 3, a front view thereof; Fig. it, a section on the line si of Fig'. l, but showing the sashes unlocked; Fig. a view similar to 4, but showing the sashes locked together; Fig. 6, a bottom plan view of that part of the sash-lock which is connected with the lower sash, part of the construction being' broken away and part shown in section; Fig. T, a view similar to Fig. 6, but showing the parts in a different position; and Fig. 8, a plan view of that part of the lock shown in Fig. 6.
Figs. Q to 8, inclusive, of the accompanying drawings are made full size and on a scale larger than Fig. l, and in said drawings l have shown at fl an ordinary window-frame having upper and lower sashes u2 and a, and in the practice of my invention I provide a sash-lock composing a part which is secured to the bottom rail of the upper sash, and a part c, which is secured to the top rail of the lower sash.
In the accompanying drawings the bottom rail of the upper sash is provided with a cleat or strip u, which aids in holding the glass if in position, and the top rail of the lower sash is provided with a cleat or strip a, which aids in holding the glass T in position; but this construction is not absolutely necessary, and any suitable means may be provided for holding the glasses u and (17in their respective sashes.

.In constructing the part c of my improved sash-lock, which is secured to the top rail of the lower sash, I provide a casing 12, which is hollow and the front part of which is segmental in form, and said casing c2 is provided with a top plate c and with side extensions c", whereby it may be secured to the top rail of the bottom sash. The top plate a of the casing c is provided with a central opening and mounted on said casing c is a lock-plate having a laterally-directed handledg. The lock-plate l/ is segmental in form at one side and provided with a flange d, which extends about two-thirds of the way around the same, aud said lock-plate is held i-n place hy a screw or bolt (1*, which passesdownwardly through said plate and to the bottom end of which is secured a plate c, part of which is shown in section in Fig, 5, and the end portions only of which are shown in Figs. (i and T, and said plate a constitutes a bottom for the casing The lock-plate is also provided centrally thereof with a tubular journal 75, which passes downwardly through the opening in the top plate e of the casing c?, and in one side of the lower end of the tubular journal (In is arecess d". The plate a is also provided centrally of the upper side thereof with a sleeve @2, which passes upwardly into the journal ff', and wound on the screw or bolt dl is a springf, one end IOO of which is secured to the plate Z or to the journal Z", and the other end of which is connected with the sleeve @2 by being passed out through a slot e3, formed therein, or in any desired manner. The top plate c3 of the casing c2 is also preferably provided with a segmental bearing g, in which the journal Z5 turns, and in the front portion of the casing c2 and pivoted to the top plate 03 thereof by means of a screw or similar device g2 is a dog g3, having a nose g4, which is adapted to enter the recess Z6 in the journal Z5, and pivoted to said dog g3 is an arm g5, which passes backwardly through the back wall of the casing o2 and which is shown in its innermost position in Fig. 7 and in its outermost position in Fig. 6, and said dogis normally held in the position shown in Fig. 6 by a spring g5, coiled on the pivot-screw g2, and one end of which bears on the casing c2 and the other of which is connected with said dog, as shown at g The normal position of the lock-plate Z when the sashes are not locked together is that shown in Fig. 4, in which position the handle Z2 is turned to the right, and the normal position of said plate when the sashes are locked together is that shown in Fig. 5, in which the handle Z2 is turned to the left, as shown in full lines in Figs. 7 and 8. Suppose the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position the dog g2 and the journal Z5 are in the position shown in Fig. 6. If now the upper sash be raised or the lower sash lowered, the arm g5 will be forced backwardly by the inclined shoulder or projection b4, and this will release the dog g3 from the journal Z5 and all the parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 7, and the flange Z3 of the plate Z will engage the lip b3 at the top of the casing Z) and the sashes will be securely locked together. In order to disconnect the sashes, the plate Z is turned by means of the handle Z2 to the right, as shown in Fig. 4 and in full lines in Fig. 8 and also in full lines in Fig. 6, and the upper sash may be lowered or the lower sash raised, as may be desired, and in order to lock the sashes together the abovedescribed operation is repeated.
Although I have described the journal Z 5 as tubular in form, the interior thereof in the form of construction shown is angular in crosssection, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and in securing the spring f as hereinbefore described the upper end thereof is connected with a plate ZL and is placed in the top portion of said journal, and this plate turns with the lock-plate Z and the effectis the same as though the spring were secured to said lock-plate directly or to the journal Z 5.
My improved sash-lock is simple in construction and automatic in operation, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A window-sash lock comprising two parts, one of which is adapted to be secured to the bottom portion of the upper sash and the other to the top portion of the lower sash, that part which is adapted to be secured to the bottom portion of the upper sash comprising a casing open at the front and having a depending top lip and an inclined lug or projection, and that part which is adapted to be secured to the top portion of the lower sash comprising a casing having a top opening, a locking-plate mounted thereon and provided with a tubular journal which passes downwardly through said opening and is provided in one side with a recess, said casing being also provided with a bottom plate having a tubular sleeve adapted to enter said journal, a spring mounted in said sleeve and journal and one end of which is secured to the locking-plate and the other to said sleeve, a spring-operated dog mounted in said casing and adapted to engage the recess in said journal, and an arm connected with said dog and passing backwardly through said casing and adapted to be operated by the inclined lug or projection in that part of the device which is adapted to be connected with the upper sash, said locking-plate being also provided with a segmental and inclined flange or rim adapted to engage the lip of that -part of the device which is adapted to be connected with the upper sash, and said locking-plate being also pivoted at one side of the casing which is adapted to be connected with the lower sash and provided at the opposite side with a handle, substantially as shown and described.
