Be it known that I, ELwooD BEBLER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Los'An-` geles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-y EXtractors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in4 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.- 4
This invention relates to improvements in devices for extracting spikes, nails, bolts, and
the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by which such spikes,
nails, or bolts may be quickly and easily drawn'4 f and well adapted to the-purpose for which .it
is designed. A
.With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. i

Referring more particularly tothe drawings, 1 denotes an' upright frame oir casing consisting of -a rear or back plate 2, on the front edges of which are formed guideways 3, vextending throughout the entire length of -the plate 2. On the rear side of the plate 2, at the lower end thereof, is formed a rearwardly-projecting foot-piece or brace 4, which supports the frame 1 in an upright position over arail. In the lower end of the plate 2 between the guideways 3 is formed a vertical slot or opening 5 to accommodate the head of the spike when being drawn.
Slidably mounted in the guideways 3 is a jaw-closing frame, consisting of side pieces 7, connected together on their forward edges by cross plates or bars 8. On the side pieces7 are formed fianges or ribs 9, which are adapt-` ed to engage the guideways 3 to hold said frame in place. On one of the flanges is formed a series of ratchet-teeth 10, which are adapted to be engaged by a spring-actuated pawl 11, pivotally mounted between ears or lugs 12, formed on the side of the frame 1 adjacent to the upper end of the same, said pawl normally engaging the teeth 10 to hold the frame 6 in an elevated position, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The pawl 11 "is provided with a inger-piece, whereby the same may be retracted from engagement with teeth 10 to permit theV frame 6 to drop.
Slidably mounted -in .the frame 6 is an extractor-bar 13, havingformed on its rear side near the upper end a lug 14, having a'series of rack-teeth 15 formed thereon, and below said toothed lug is arranged a rack formed by Vproviding a series of apertures 16 in the eX- tractorfbar, as shown. The racks on said extractor-'bai' are adapted to be engaged by an operatinglever 17, pivotally mounted between two ears or lugs 18, formed on the rear side of the frame 1 and having on its inner end a segmental head 19, on which is formed two sets of teeth 2() and 21, which work through a slot 22, formed in the back or plate 2 of the frame 1.
whereby upon operation ofthe lever 17 said The teeth 2O are 'adaptedto engage the teeth 15 on the lug14, and thete'eth 21 are adapted to engage the rack formed IOO end of the bar are pivoted jaws 24, said jaws having formed at their upper ends and on their inner sides cylindrical-shaped lugs 25, which are adapted to engage cylindricalshaped recesses formed in the sides of the head 23, whereby said jaws are pivotally connected to said head. On their lower ends the jaws are formed with curved laterally and forwardly projecting spike-engaging claws 26, which are adapted to grip or take a irm hold on the head of the spike. The jaws 24 are normally held in an expanded or open position by means of springs 27, which are here shown as Hat ribbon-springs having their upper ends iixed to the sides of the head, the lower ends of the same bearing against the inner side of the jaws to force the same outwardly.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever 17'is raised, thereby lowering the extractorbar, so that the jaws carried by the same will be in position to engage the head of a spike.
The pawl 11 is now disengaged from the teeth' 10` on the jaw-closing frame 6, which will allow said frame to drop upon the jaws 24 and force the same inwardly to cause the claws 26 to engage beneath the head of the spike and firmly grip the same. The lever 17 is now forced downwardly, causing the teeth 20 on the same to engage the teeth 15 on lug 14 to give the extractor-bar an initial upward movement which will start the spike. The teeth 21 on the lever will now engage the apertures 16 in the extractor-bar, and further downward movement of the lever will continue the upward movement of said bar and completely draw the spike. In the upward movement of the extractor-bar the jaw-closing frame 6 will also be carried upwardly by the same, owing to the engagement of the lower end thereof with the jaws of said bar. The pawl 11 will slip over the ratchet-teeth 10 when the frame 6 is being elevated by the extractor-bar, but will engage the teeth and prevent the frame from dropping when the extractor-bar is lowered.
The peculiar construction and arrangement of the teeth 15 on the lug 14 and the teeth 2O on the head of the lever gives an increased leverage or power to said lever at its initial movement, thereby facilitating the starting of the spike.
lFrom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the' accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages oi this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a supporting-frame, an extractor-barslidably connected thereto for longitudinal movement, movable jaws carried by the extractor-bar, a sliding frame on said bar to close said jaws, a pawl-and-ratchet connection between the supporting-frame and the sliding frame, and means to operate the extractor-bar, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame or easing having vertically-disposed guideways, of a jaw-closing frame having a sliding pawland-ratchet engagement with said guideways, an extractor-bar slidably mounted in said jawclosing frame, a rack formed on said extractorbar, spring-expanded extracting-jaws pivoted to the lower reduced end of said bar, in position to be engaged and closed by said jawclosing frame, an operating-lever having a toothed segmental head pivoted in said supporting casing or frame to engage the rack on said extractor-bar to raise the same and thereby extract a spike engaged by said jaws, and means for giving an increased force or power to said lever in its initial movement, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame or casing, having vertically-disposed guideways, of a jaw-closing frame having a sliding pawland-ratchet engagement with said guideways, an extractor-bar slidably mounted in said jawclosing frame, a toothed lug formed on the upper end of said bar, a rack formed on the same below said lug, spring-expanded extracting-jaws, pivoted to the lower end of said extractor-bar, in position to be engaged and closed by the dropping of said jaw-closing frame, to engage a spike, an ojiierating-lever pivotally mounted in said supporting-frame, a segmental head formed on said lever, said head having two sets of teeth, one of which sets is adapted to engage therack on said extractor-bar and the other of which engages the toothed lug above said rack, whereby an increased force or power is given to said lever when operated to raise said extractor-ba r, substantially as described.
