WELL DRILL AND TOOL.
Application filed November 27, 1923.
To all to ham it may concern Be it known that 1, Joint l t. TALTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of 5 Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvernents in ell Drills and Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a well tool, the general object of the invention being to provide means -for recovering bits and the like from wells.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for causing the gripping jaws to firmly engage the bit when the device is being pulled from the well.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the seve 'al views, and in which 1- :Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view Figure 3 is a similar view but showing the parts in a dilterent position.
Figure a is a section on line 41-.--l: of Figme 2. M Figure 1s a section on line 55 of Fig- U.) r
uic -1- Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 2.
In these views, 1 indicates a casing which is provided with the elongated slot 2 and which has the wedges 3 on its interior. I cross bar 4 isarranged at the top of the cas lug to which the supporting cable 5 is attached. Gripping jaws 6 are arranged at the lower part of the casing and these jaws are carried by the stems 7 which are connected together intermediate their ends by the cross piece 8. Toggle, links 9 are fastened to the upper ends of the stems and the upper ends of these links are connected to a cable 10. \Vedges 11 are connected with the lower parts of the stems 7 for cooperating with the wedges 3 and the upper ends out the stems are normally heldin engagement with the lugs 12 on the casing by the springs 13 so that Serial No. 677,288.
the jaws are normally held apart with their wedges out of engagement with the wedges on the casing. Projections 14c are arranged on the stems for engagement by a bit, such as shown at A, or other device in the well so that the lower ends of the stems are forced apart to release the upper ends from the lugs 12, thus permitting the casing to drop so that the wedges 3 will engage the wedges 11 and force the jaws together and thus grip the bit or other object. The cable is then pulled upon to raise the device "from the well and it will be seen that this action will cause the wedges to more firmly engage each other and thus make the aws grip the bit so that there is no danger of the jaws releasing the bit. g
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall with in the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing having wedges therein, jaw members located in the casing, stems connected with the members and having wedges thereon for cooperating with the first mentioned wedges, links connected with the stems, cables connected with the links and with the casing, means for normally holding the parts with the jaws in open position and means actuated by the object to be recovered for rendering the first mentioned means inactive. I
2. A device of the class described comprising a casing having wedges therein, a cable connected with the upper end of the casing, jaw members in the casing, stems connected with the jaw members, a cross piece pivotally connecting the stemstogether, wedges on the stems, toggle links connected with the upper ends of the stems, a cable connected with the upper ends of the links, projections on the casing for engaging the upper ends of the stems, springs for holding the stems in engagement with the projections and means engaged by the bit for disengaging the stems from the projections, p
