PATENT OFFICE.
OASPAR PRANGEMEIER, OF MONSTER, GERMANY.
COMBINED SPADE AND PICKAX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,770, dated August 30, 1904-.
Application filed April 6, 1903. Serial NO- 151,421. (NO modell) To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, OAsPAR PRANGEMEIER, engineer, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Nos. 41 and 42 Katthagen, Munster, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Combined Spade and Pickax, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved implement which can be used either as a spade or as a pickax for various purposes.
Special objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the construction and to render more efficient, serviceable, and durable in operation devices of the kind referred to.
lVith these ends in view the invention consists in the novel combination, arrangement,
and adaptation of parts, all as more fully- 0. The end of the metal tube Z2 projecting beyond the shaft a is bifurcated and carries on a pin f rotatable the spade (Z. On the front end of the metal tube 5 a ring 6 is pushed, which being previously provided with holes for the reception of the aforesaid pivot f, is retained in its place on the tube Z) by said pivot. The ring 0 shows a slot at its upper end running in the direction and terminating in the slot in the metal tube 6. On the opposite lower side the ring 6 is completely split open. The head portion of the spade (Z is received in the upper slot of the ring a and rigidly secured therein, as will be more fully described later on, when the spade assumes the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
A guide-tube g is movably mounted on the metal tube I), which can be fixed in its work- 'in its position.
ing position by the hereinbefore-described bolt 0. This bolt 0 is suitably secured to the guide-tube g by means of a short chain, and a screw-nut A may be screwed on the free end of the bolt 0, if desired, in order to render impossible an accidental loosening of the parts. If a screw-nut h is employed,,same may likewise be secured to the guide-tube g bymeans of a short chain. The bolt 0 can penetrate the tube Z) and shaft at either outside or through the guide-tube g. The end of the tube 6 projecting beyond the shaft (4 is provided with holes z'for the reception of the bolt 76 in a direction corresponding to that of the pivot f. i
For adjusting the implement as a spade the spade cl is turned around its pivot f from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to the position illustrated in Fig. 2. This movability of the spade d is rendered possible in view of the bifurcated front end of the metal tube Z) and by virtue of the lower slot of the ring 0. Obviously the length of the slot originating the bifurcation of the metal tube 6 must be chosen, so as to enable the head portion of the spade (Z to take up room in the tube 6. The bolt is is then pushed through the holes 2' in the tube 6 and through a bore previously provided at the proper place in the head portion of the spade cl. By virtue of the two bolts f and k the spade n is rigidly secured The guide-tube g is then pushed along on the tube 6 until same can be secured in its working position by means of the bolt 0, on the free end of which a screwnut it may be screwed. The front edge of the guide-tube g is preferably thickened, so as to register with the marginal edge of the ring 0.
To use the implement as a pickax, the bolt 0 is removed, the guide-tube g pushed backwardly, the bolt it removed, and thereupon the spade is turned to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 8. After fitting again the bolt k in the holes 2' and pushing the guidetube 9 along the metal tube 6 until the bolt 0 can secure said guide-tube in its position the spade (Z will be rigidly secured, as the head portion of same is accommodated in the upper slot of the ring 0 on theone hand and rests against the front edge of the guide-tube g on the other hand.
The head portion of the spade cl can be shaped to serve as an aX, and the implement may likewise serve as a hoe for agricultural purposes.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved combined spade and pickax comprising in combination a shaft a, a metal tube 5 secured thereon, a spade (Z rotatable on a pivot f, supported in the bifurcated front end of the aforesaid metal tube Z), a bolt k, a pair of holes 2' for said bolt 7b" in the tube 5 corresponding in position to a bore in the head portion of the spade d, a movable guidetube g on the tube 7) adapted to be fixed in regard to the shaft a to secure the position of the spade (Z as a piekax, and a slotted ring 0 20 on the front end of the metal tube 7), substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 22d day of November, 1902, in 5
