NEWSPAPER HOLDER ND BINDER.
' SPECIFICATIONvforrnVng part of Letters Patent No.i 768,505, dated August 23, 1904.
Application Ela october 2o, 1903.
T0 @ZZ whom it Hefty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BECHERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, invented certain new State'of Missouri, have ,and useful Improvements in Newspaper Holders and Binders, of which the following is a specification containingafull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in newspaper holders .and binders; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter'shown, described, andclaimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved newspaper holder and binder especially for use in barber-shops and places of entertainment, wherebynewspapers and magazines may be preserved and hung up out of the way when not in use.
In the drawings, Figure l isa sectional side elevation of my improved newspaper holder and binder having one or more newspapers therein. Fig. 2 is avdetail sectional view of the upper end of the holder-and binder. Fig. 3 isa section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view'of the lower end of the holder and binder. A
'l indicates a sheet-metal clamping-bar, which is U-shaped in cross-section and extends the full length of the newspaper or magazine and has beaded or rounded marginal edges 2. between said edges is barely sufficient to receive the thickness of the papers or magazines which are to be held and bound, and during use when it is desired to hold and bind one or morefpapers or magazines a long wire or rod 3, having a ring or hoolr 4 at its upperend, is inserted between the lleaves of the papers or magazines in such manner as to separate them into two equal parts, as'shown in Fig. 3, and'then the lower end of said rod is benty upwardly parallel to the body within said bar, thereby securely retaining said papers or magazines in position upon said rod and retaining the rod in the position just described, the lower end of said rod being sharpened for the purpose of more readily entering between the leaves of the papers or magazines. Afterv the rod has Serial No. 177,824. (No model.)
been thus inserted the clamping-bar lis next placed in position by sliding it over and upon the exterior surface ofthe bound edges of the papers or magazines, beginning, preferably,
at the lower end of the latter and gradually forcing the bar upwardly until it occupies the positionin which it is shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of said clamping-bar is preferably made flaring or slightly funnel-shaped, as indicated by the numeral 5, for the purpose of more readily passing it over the papers and magazines.
l When it is desired to remove the holder or binder, the above-described operation is reversed. The clamping-bar 1l is first removed by sliding it endwise in a direction away from the hook or ring 4, and then the rod 3 may be removed by first straightening its lower end and then, withdrawing it from the papers or magazines.
'By means of the hook or ring 4 at the upper end ofthe rod 3 the device holding the newspaper may be readily hung up in order to preserve the newspaper.
Theimproved newspaper holder and binder, comprising the U-shaped clamping-bar axially rigid but having yielding edges, and extending throughout the length of a newspaper and adapted to 'clamp the bound edges of the paper between said yielding edges, and a rod adapted to be inserted between the leaves of the newspaper within said U-shaped clampingbar, in order-to enlarge the body of paper within said bar and prevent the lateral withdrawal thereof; the lower end of said rod within Said bar beingubent upwardly parallel to the body thereof to embrace the edges of the newspaper and to prevent axial withdrawal thereof, and the opposite end of said rod having formed thereon a suspending hook or ring, substantially as described.
In testimony WhereofI have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE BEGHERER.
