To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIS MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden,
in the county of-Middlesex and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and
- I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to attainforth and claimed.

A similar bracket J in like mannerfacilitates the attachment and detachment of the jet-block and proximate parts and provides for the support of the same. In this application I make no claim tothe construction of the jet-block valve and stuff ing-box and therefore consider an extended 8odescription of them unnecessary. I Of course the relative arrangement of the i various parts within and outside of the cas- ;ing, the points of entrance and exit of the tubes, and the form, number, and dimensions 8 5 .of the helices, burners, mixing-chamber, and vapor-generator are capable of considerable modification within the limits of my invention. i
The water-tube B should be of small diamo eter and the burners C of relative large diameter to get the best results from the steamgenerating helices B. The said tube preferably discharges steam into a pressure-tank, whence it passes where and as needed; but of course I do not confine myself to such arrangement and use.
It will be observed that the flame from the ends of the burners is directed against the vapor-generator at right angles thereto and that the jets of flame from the holes in the sides of the burners are likewise directed radially against the surrounding steam-tube forming the steam-generating helices in all parts of the length and circumference thereof, also that no part nor material intervenes in either instance. 1 Of course the devices aforesaid may be used for generating other vapors and gaseous bodies besides steam.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. Asteam-generator, consisting solely of a connected series of tubular helices, in combination with a series of laterally-perforated burners each of which is arranged longitudi- 2 nally in one of the helices and discharges radially directly against the tube composing said helix substantially as set forth.
2. A series of parallel steam-generating tubular helices and a helical tube arranged across 5 their rear ends for the production of inflammable vapor in combination with a casing, which incloses all of the said parts, but is provided withopenings that register with the bores of the said helices, a series of tubular perforated 3 burners (1, which are adapted to enter the said helices and discharge against them through- I) out their length as well as against the said vaper-generating tube, an elongated mixingchamber H to which the said burners are at- 3 5 tached and with which they may be withdrawn from the casing and a tubular connection from the said vapor-generating tube to the said mixing-chamber, supplying vapor to the latter, in order that it may there mix with air 4 and pass thence to the burners substantially as set forth.
3. A series of steamgenerating tubular helices and a generator of inflammable vapor arranged across their rear ends, in combination with a casing, which incloses all of the said parts, but ,is provided with openings and register with the bores of the said helices, a series of burners which enter the said helices and dischargeagainst them and against the 5 vapor-generator, an elongated mixing-chamber H to which the said burners are connected they being removable thereon, a jet-block discharging into the open end of said mixingchamber, a tube connecting said vapor-generator to said jet-block, and a valve cooperating with said jet-block to control the flow of vapor from said generator to the 111ixingchamber and burners substantially as set forth.
4. A case inclosing a steam-generator tube, wound into parallel cylindrical helices, burners extending through said helices and discharging from their sides and ends and a generator of inflammable vapor arranged across the ends of the said burners to be heated by all of them, the said generator supplying the said burners through tubular connections for the purpose set forth.
5. In a steam-generator, a helix consisting solely of a tube wound into that form, in combination with a burner constituting a core for the said helix extending for the full length of the latter and discharging radially against the said tube in all parts of the length and circumference of the said helix substantially as set forth.
6. A steam-generator, consisting solely of a connected series of tubular helices, in combination with a series of burners, each of which extends longitudinally through one of the helices and discharges radially directly against the tube thereof at all points of the length and circumference of the said helix substantially as set forth.
7. A steam-generator consisting solely of a pipe wound to form a connected series of steamgenerating helices, in combination with a series of burners each extending longitudinally through one of the said helices and a generator of inflammable vapor arranged in front of the discharging ends of the said burners and connected to their inlet ends to supply them with said vapor, the said burners having open discharging ends, directing the flame against the said generator at right angles to the axis thereof and being also provided with lateral perforations which direct radial jets of flame against the tube in all parts of the length and circumference of each helix substantially as set forth.
