INVENTOR A 77'OHNE YS UNITED ST TES Patented August 16, 1904.
JOSEPH LAWRENCE GALLEOIEZ, OE DEFERIET, NEW YORK.
GUARD-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,933, dated August 16, 1904:. Application filed November 27,1903. Serial No. 182,777. (No model.)
'1'!) all/ w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LAWRENCE GAL- LEOIEZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Deferiet, in the county of J efferson and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guard-Board, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a guard-board for the couch-rolls of a paper-making machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a guard-board which may be made to engage the couch-roll more uniformly than heretofore without, however, subjecting the roll to unnecessarily-destructive pressure.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention. while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a front view of the invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
a indicates the couch-roll, and b the usual felt covering thereof.
cindicates a suitable support extending parallel with the couch-roll and carrying the wiper devices of the guard-board. These devices comprise a body (Z, formed, preferably, of wood and fastened by lag-screws cor the like to the support 0. Said body (Z has a rabbet on its lower rear edge, and in said rabbet is set a suitably-fastened metal plate f lying flush with the rear surface of the body and extending down to the lower edge thereof. Fastened to this plate f and extending forwardly through the body (Z are a number of bolts g, having thumb-nuts g at their outer ends. These bolts and thumb-nuts serve adjustably to hold in place the front clamping plates h, which are also formed of metal and which lie over a rabbet (Z, formed in the lower front edge of the body d. Said rabbet d carries the wiper, which comprises two or more felt sheets 2', glued or otherwise fastened together and held between the front metal clamping-plate h and a backing-strip of Wood. Engaging the upper edges of the felt strips 7; and the backing-strip k is a metal plate Z, and this plate is in turn engaged by screws m, which pass through athreaded metallic plate 72, secured by lag-screws 0 to the upper edge of the body (Z. The said screws m are provided with jam-nutsp, which enable the screws to be held at any desired adjustment. I
The wiper-strips t' are adapted to bear on the periphery of the felt-covered couch-rolla in the usual manner. They are adjusted by the screws m, so that the proper engagement is attained, after which the jam-nuts should be fastened down on the plate a, and the thumb-nuts g should then be tightened to clamp the plate in against the parts c' and k, holding them firmly against the wallof the front rabbet cl in the body (Z. By this arrangement the wiper may be adjusted with the greatest possible nicety, and when so adjusted it may be held securely, so that it will be impossible to accidentally dislocate it. Further it will be seen that by this arrangement while the engagement between the guard-board and couch-roll is perfect it may at the same time be so accurately adjusted as to prevent unnecessarily wearing away the felt of the couch-roll.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A guard-board, comprising a support, a
body securely mounted thereon, a wiper adjustable 'in the body, and means for adjusting and holding the wiper, said means comprising a screw mounted in the body and engaging the wiper and a clamping-plate mounted on the body and engaging the wiper to hold it in the desired position.
2. A guard-board, comprising a body having a rabbet therein, a wiper set in saib rab bet, means for adjusting the wiper in the rabbet, and a clamp-plate lying over the rabbet and adapted to hold the wiper at the desired adjustment.
3. A guard-board, comprising a body having a groove therein, a wiper comprising a felt shield and a backingstrip set in said groove, means for adjusting the wiper in the groove, and a clamp-plate bearing on the side of the wiper-strip opposite the backing-strip and adapted to clamp the wiper in position.
4. A guard-board, comprising a body, a wiper, comprising a fabric strip, a rigid backing-strip at one side thereof, a top strip eX- tending along the upper edge of the fabric and backing strip, an adjusting device hearing on the top strip and working in the body, and a clamping-plate mounted on the body and bearing against the fabric strip at the side opposite the backing-strip adjustably to hold the wiper in place.
5. A guard-board, comprising a body, a
screw working therein, a wiper comprising a fabric strip, a backing-strip engaging one side thereof, a top strip engaging the upper edges of the fabric and backing strips, said top strip being engaged by the said screw, a clampingplate engaging the side of the fabric strip opposite the backing-strip, and means for holding the clamping-strip removably in active position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
