Lettere Patent No. 75,780, dated Apri? 14, 1868.
IMPROVMENT IN PADLOGKS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONOERN:
Be it known that I, JACOB E. KOHOUT, 'of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, ihave invented an Improved Padlock; and do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, refen ence 'being-had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure luis an elevation, showing the shackle and hasp locked to the body of the padlock.
Figure 2, an edge view of same. I
Figure 3, an elevation of the padlock, with the hasp unlocked for reception of the key.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation, showing the inner or working parts of the lock.
Figure 5, an inner view of the front plate, showing the device for looking the hasp.
Figure 6, an elevation of the key.
Figure 7, a View .of the shackle, being released from the sliding bolts; and
Figures 8 and 9 are views of the trippcr, for preventing reverse movement of the key after locking and unlocking.V v
The nature of this invention consists in locking the liasp to thebody of the lock, by means of a lever and springs attached to the front plate, until it is desired to insert the key for the purpose of unlocking the padlock, when, by pressing the said lever downward, the hasp is thrown outward, exposing the key-hole of the lock; und also in a device placed between the sliding bolts, which obliges the key to move in one and the same direction for locking and unlocking the padlock.
i In the accompanying drawings, representing the construction of my invention, A is the case or body ci' the lock, C the shackle, and D the hasp, hinged to the front plate, E, oi` the padlock. This hasp has a catch, d, ou
its inner side, which passes over a bentlever, F, attachedto the inner sideoi' the vplate E, said lever, with the spring G, for'holding the lever in position, (sec lig. 5,) constituting the locking-device of the hasp. H is the device placed betweenthe sliding bolts, for preventing retrograde movement of the key, consisting of the'stationary bed I, rectangular stop K, and' spring L, (seeigs. 8 und 9.) M M are the sliding bolts, which slide on pins m m, said'bolts being operated by `the key O and springs I? P. Itis the spring which throws'the shackle out of the lock on beingreleased from the sliding bolts.
The operation of my invention is as follows: My invention being locked, as shown in lig. 1, 1t is unlocked and operated as follows: By pressing the bent lever` F, which extends a short distance outside of the case of the lock, downward, the catch el will be disengagedfrom the said lever, and the hasp D raised, (see iig. 3,) exposing the key-hole. New, by inserting the key O in the lock, und turning the key in one direction, the sliding bolts M M will be drawn back i'romthe shackle, and the shacklev pushed out of Ithe lock by the spring R; on which the shackle rests, when the said bolts will resume their former position, by being immediately pushed forward by the springs P P, the stop K dropped, so as to prevent return of the key; and my invention can be again locked by simply pressing the shackle downward, when it will be embraced by the sliding bolts and locked, thereby rendering my padlock, as well as its hasp, self-locking. Y
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,is-
1. The stop K and spring L, for preventing retrograde movementoi` the key.
2. And, in combinationtherewith, I claim the sliding bolts M and shackle-spring Rf, all operating together, substantially as and for the purposes describedund setvforth.
In testimony whereof, I havehereun-to set my signature, this lthpday of January, A. D. 1868.
' JACOB' E. KOHOUT.
