Be it known that I, LEWIS L. KELLY, of Delaware Station, Ripley county, Indiana, have invented a ne'w and useful Tanning-Machne; and I hereby declare vthe following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to a. mode of tanning hides better and more xpeditiously'than can-be done by the ordinary mode of handling in a common pit.

'Figure 1 is an axial section through a pit provided with my improved agitator or handler.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the agitator toa smaller scale.

. A is a pit, tank, or vat, which may have a square, octagonal, circular, or other transverse section. B is a vertical shaft, supported below, in a step C, at the pit's centre, and journalled above to a beam or transom, D,

which extends across the month of the pit.- The shoft carries a horizontal-wheel or rack, E, which wheel is.

furnished with pins or hooks F, from which the hides aresuspcnrl'ed. In place of the hooks F, clamps or other devices may be employed for suspending the hides. l l

The reciprocatingmotion also acts to-wash olf the slime and sediment from the hides. t i I The above-described apparatus may be used for either liming, hating, or handling hides, or for tanning them throughout, and will -do the work in oncteiith of the time, and with a better result, than-with the old# fashioned pits..

I claim herein as new, and of my invention* The arrangement of the wheel or rack E F, having a reciprocating or partial .rotation withina tanners vat, as and for the purpose set forth.
