RAIL-VALISE.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent N0. 767,767, dated August 16, 1904.
Application led September 4, 1903. Serial No. 171.996. (No model.)
Beit known that I, JACOB RUEGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stirling, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Valises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a peculiar form of carrier more especially adapted for transporting the warp beam or spool used upon looms from place to place after the thread has been wound thereon. The article above constituted must bevery delicately handled, since it is very necessary that the silk threads be thoroughly protected, and for this reason it is usually boxed or crated preparatory to transportation.
It is therefore an essential object of my invention to secure an eicient substitute for the ordinary method of packing' the warps, which is more conveniently applicable, more economical owing to the fact that it may be used over and over again, and which, further, is lighter than a box or crate, thereby involving'a decreased amount of cost relative to transportation.` I
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
lVhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modiiication, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is aview showing my valise or car-` rier applied thereto. Eig. 2 is av plan View of the valise open. Eig. 3 is an end view of my invention. Fig. 4 is a modification showing a different form of body. Eig. 5 is a detail View of the securing means alone.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The valise is a simple construction comprising a body 1, which is preferably made of Sheet material-such as canvas, leather, or the like-which is adapted to encircle the warpbeam, which is designated 2, embracing the latter. The warp-beam, which carries the thread, is of ordinary form, langed at the corresponding' end portions. as shown at 3, and provided with the journals 4. The valise incloses the warp-beam, and in order to secure the device about the beam any suitable means, such as buckles 5 and coperating straps 6, may be employed. The corresponding end portions of the body l of the valise or carrier are provided with a series of openings 7, disposed at intervals thereon, and these openings receive draw-strings 8, which, passing therethrough, are adapted to draw the ends about the beam 2 to prevent lateral displacement of the carrier -and for the protection of the threads in a manner very clearly seen. rllhe protector bars or slats 10 are secured to the straps 6 longitudinally, being spaced from each other, so as to not'only protect the Valise isusage, but'also to serve as stiffening means for the article.
The bars or slats 10, together with the straps 6, to which they are attached, are entirely independent of the body of the valise and,'as shown, are secured to the longitudinal straps 6 or like elements by suitable fastenings, so as to be separately applied to the bodyl after the same has been disposed so as to embrace the war p-beam preparatory to the transportation of the latter.
It will be understood that within the contemplation of my invention IV may substitute chains or any equivalent means for the straps 6, which carry the bars 10 when the latter are independently used.
The valise or carrier may be very cheaply constructed, and after the warp-beam has been transported the carrier is removed therefrom and may then be returned to the original sender of the beam or reused in any manner as found desirable.
It is my design to utilize the general construction of the carrier embodied inmy invention for other purposes than transporting warp-beams, since, as would be obvious, same may be made in diere'nt sizes for use as a shipping-trunk or like receptacle.
In the modified form of the invention shown IOO means for said body comprising removable straps, and paralleling stiffener protectingbars permanently attached to the said straps securing the same together and adapted for removal upon displacement of the straps aforesaid.
