Be it known that LWILLIAM HEAToN LONGS- DORE, a citizen of the United States, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces for Steam-Generators or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of furnaces wherein steam is admitted to the rebox to enhance combustion; and the object of the invention is to provide means for superheating the steam to a point near that of decomposition before it is admitted to the bed of fuel in the fire-box and to provide a distributing-head for the steam of special form and adapted to eject the steam in jets to the desired points in the re-box.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate an embodiment of the invention as applied to the furnace of a boiler of the Lancashire type, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through the axis of a furnaceflue and a part of the boiler, the furnace being equipped with this invention. Fig. 2,is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken at line ac3 in Fig. 1 and looking toward the front. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the superheater on a larger scale than the principal views, Fig 4 being a section along line x4 in Fig. 5 and Fig. 5 being a plan broken away along the line x5 in Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively an elevation and plan of a form of the distributing-head differing somewhat in shape from the head shown in the principal views. Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing a slightly modified arrangeof the conduit in the superheater.
-ln the eorts heretofore made to superheat steam to be supplied to a furnace above'the fire-bed, and especially in the class of internal furnaces, such as those employed in the Lancashire and Scotch boilers, great difliculty has been experienced in raising the temperature of the steam sufliciently for admission to the furnace with goodeffect and also in providing a superheater which could be maintained intact under the intense heat. In providing such a boiler with means for superheating and delivering steam to the lire-box it is essential that the means employed shall be simple in construction and durable. The present invention has for its object to overcome these difficulties as well as to improve the construction in other respects. Usually the Lancashire boiler has in it two symmetrically-arranged furnace-dues, each provided with a furnace; but as the furnaces are alike only one of the furnace-dues is shown in the drawings.
l designates the boiler; 2, the furnace-flue therein; 3, the fire-box; 4, rotatable grate-bars of a known kind; 5, the bridge-wall; 6, the charging-opening, and 7 the front plate or head of the boiler. These are known features, and the present invention is not restricted to the use of this special kind or construction of the devices named.
About the charging door or opening 6 and forming,'as herein shown, the frame for said opening is a superheater 8, which is connected by a pipe 9 with the steam-space in the boiler l or with any other course of supply which will furnish steam. As shown in the detail views, Figs. 4 and 5, this superheater 8 is in the form of an arch with uprights at its sides. It will be made of metal, preferably iron or steel, and will have formed in it a zigzag passage 8 for the steam. The pipe 9 connects with the superheater at one end of the zigzag passage or conduit, and from the other end thereof a pipe 10 conveys the superheated steam to a distributing-head l1 Within the fire-box and secured to the front 7 above the superheater. As shown in the principal views, the'distributing-head has a rectangular form when seen from the point of view of Fig. 3 and a somewhat triangular form when seen from the Y point of view of Fig. l, the inner face thereof,
which is presented toward the bridge-wall, being rounded or convex and provided with several vtiers or rows of perforations or jetapertures l2 to emit jets of highly-superheated or gaseous steam into the fire-box. The jetapertures of the several tiers are disposed at different vertical angles, as indicated by the dotted lines extending therefrom in Fig. l, in order to distribute the gaseous fluid to all parts of the bed of fuel. This distributinghead may have the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, where the head 1la has the form of half the TOO frustum of a cone and the jet-apertures therein are so disposed as to direct the jets divergently at horizontal as well as vertical angles.
The steam before it enters the fire-box from the jet-apertures must be raised to a temperature of not less than 650O Fahrenheit in order to produce the best effective results, and this temperature will be attained in its iioW through the zigzag or serpentine conduit 8 in the superheater and in the distributinghead.
The superheater 8X (shown somewhat diagrammatically in Fig. 8) differs from that already described only in providing a longer zigzag conduit for the steam and in having both the inlet and outlet for steam at its top or crown. In this disposition of the conduit the passage extends twice the length of the superheater.
It will be noted that the distributing-head according to this invention is somewhat triangular in vertical section, as seen in Fig. .1, its base projecting out from the inner face of the lire-box front and its apertured face inclined and directed obliquely upward, and that the superheater extends out underneath its projecting base so as to protect the head from the fierce heat of the furnace, the face thereof being protected by its inclination.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A furnace for the purpose specied, having at its front a superheater 8, which eX- tends about the charging door or opening 6, said superheater having in it a zigzag conduit 8 for the steam, means for introducing steam to said passage at one end thereof, a distributing-head 1l, in the fire-box above said superheater and provided with jet-apertures 12 in its face which is presented toward the back of the fire-box, and a pipe connecting the conduit in the superheater with said head.
2. A boiler-furnace, having means for supplying steam in jets to the fire-box, having a frame for the charging-opening provided interiorly with a zigzag passage for steam Whereby it forms a superheater, having means for supplying steam from the boiler to said superheater, and means connecting said superheater with the 'jet device.
