SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,523, dated August 16, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO G. MATHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft-rigging for cars, and particularly Where tandem springs are used.
The object of my invention is to provide a stop or stops against which the draft-bar strikes before the springs reach their limit of contraction, thus avoiding the breaking of the springs by relieving them of the severe strains to which they are frequently subjected.
A further object of my invention is to construct the housing in sections instead of in one piece, as heretofore, so that the parts may be more readily assembled and the cost of manufacturing lessened.
A still further object of my invention is to construct the parts in such a manner that the draft-bar may be readily dropped below the housing for the purpose of insertingor removing the parts.
Referring to the drawings. Figure 1 is a plan view of the draft-rigging. Fig. 2 is a sectional view as on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are perspective views of the sectional housing.
A and A represent the longitudinal timbers which form part of the car. On the inner face of said timbers are bolted the housings, consisting of the end sections B and B and the intermediate sections C. The sections of the housing on the timber A correspond to those on the timber A.
The draft-bar D is provided with a yoke I), which is supported between the housings by cross-bars E, which are bolted to the under side of the timbers A and A, as shown in Fig. 2. The yoke is provided with lugs D formed on the inner side of said yoke. A tie-bolt D is passed through the said lugs to prevent the yoke from spreading.
Follower-plates F, F, F and F are placed within the yoke D and engage projections formed on the housings. Springs G and G are inserted between the follower-platesF and F and tend to hold them against the end sections B of the housings and. the projections 0 on the intermediate sections C, respectively. The springs g and g tend to hold the followerplates F and F against the said projections c and the end sections B of the housings, respectively.
Upon the intermediate sections C of the housings are formed stops C and G which limit the travel of the follower-plates.
When the draft-bar is moved in the direction of the arrow,the follower-plates F and F will remain in a fixed position, but the plates F and F will move with the draft-bar, the plate F being acted on by the lugs D on the yoke and the plate F by the end (Z of the yoke. The parts are moved against the action of the springs; but the plates F and F will contact With the stops C and C respectively, before the limit of compression of the springs is reached. When the draft-bar is moved in the opposite directiomthe plates F and F remain stationary and plates F and F follow with the draft-bar until the stops C and C are reached.
The parts forming one of the housings are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. By constructing the housings in this manner the parts can readily be assembled or removed in case any should break or get out of order.
To remove any of the parts, the cross-bars E are removed,which will allow the draft-bar to drop so that access may be had to any of x the parts.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a draft-rigging having a draft-bar and follower-plates carried thereby, the combination of housings consisting of an intermediate section, and end sections located at either end of said intermediate section, said intermediate section having lugs forming part thereof and projecting therefrom to engage said followerplates, and said end sections and said intermediate section contacting with each other to resist an end. thrust, substantially as described.
