To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL F. KLoHs, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear for Cars; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of friction draftgearembodyingmyinvention,the cap-plate of the spring-pocket and cne cheek-plate or side plate removed to show the spring. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the draft gear, the frictionblooks and spring-chamber being in section, while the cheek-plates or side plates and follower-blocks are in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical central section of the draft-gear embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a detached rear view in elevation of one of the friction-blocks and spring-pocket. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the friction-block and spring-pocket shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detached face view in elevation of the other or companion friction-block. Fig. 7is a transverse section of the friction-block shown in Fig. 6.

Myinvention relates to the construction of draft-gear for railway-cars, and especially to that class wherein friction and resilient elements are combined, the former to augment the capacity and lessen the reaction of the latter and the latter to graduate and proportion the resistance of the former, and has for its objects to simplify, lighten,and strengthen the draft-gear, as well as to render the same compact and permit of utilizing standard springs in the construction thereof. 7
To this end the main feature of my invention, generally stated, embraces the combina- 7 tion, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others'skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawings, A A indicate the usual or any approved form of side plates or cheekplates bolted or otherwise secured to the draft-timbers and provided with limit lugs or stops for the follower-blocks; B, a couplerstem, and O the usualyoke or strap riveted or bolted to the coupler-stem, as at c c, and inclosing the follower-blocks 1 1 and the friction-blocks 2 3.
The oppositely-disposed and longitudinallymovable follower-blocks 1 l are preferably wedge-shaped or provided with the diverging friction-faces 1 1, which enter between the laterally-movable friction-blocks 2 3, and said laterally movable friction blocks 2 3 are provided with converging friction-faces 2 3*, which coact with the friction-faces 1 1" of the follower-blocks.
Connected with the friction-blocks 2 3 are the members 2 3 of a telescoping springpocket in which, and consequently within the friction-blocks, is a transversely-disposed spring 4, whose opposite ends ultimately find their hearings or abutments upon the oppositely-disposed friction-blocks 2 3, so that the spring is compressed by the lateral displacement of the friction-blocks 2 and 3.
Preferably the members 2 3 of the springpocket are formed integral with the respective friction-blocks 2 and 3, (see Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7,) and in such case the friction-blocks may be cored castings, of which block 2 in addition to having the cup member 2 will have adjacent thereto slots 2 for the passage of the sections 3 of the block 3, which latter, together with the detachable disk or cap 3, constitute the companion cup of the tele scoping spring-pocket. The friction-block 3 will have a central opening 3 for the passage of the cup 2 of the friction-block 2 and adjacent thereto projecting cup-sections 3, which pass through the slots 2 of the friction-block 2.
The cup-sections 3 may be provided with bolt-holes for the reception of the bolts 5,
whereby and by means of the nuts 5 the cap or disk 3 is held in position and confines the spring twhen the same has been inserted in the telescoping spring-pocket.
The elemental construction being substantially of the character pointed out, the parts may be assembled by passing the cup 2 of friction-block 2 through the central opening 3" of friction-block 3, the projecting sections 3 of the friction-block 3 through the slots 2 of the friction-block 2, then inserting the spring 4 in the spring-pocket formed by the telescoping members 2 3, after which the cap 3 is applied and secured by the bolts 5 and nuts 5. The combined friction-blocks and spring-pocket are then inserted between the followers 1 l, the wedge ends of the followers entering the recesses between the friction-blocks, after which the yoke or strap C may be passed around the followers and included friction-blocks and secured to the stem B of the coupler in the usual manner.
The several elements being constructed and assembled as above noted will operate as follows: In either draft or buffing one follower will engage the lugs or stops of the side plates or cheek-plates and remain fixed, while the other follower will move toward the fixed follower, the diverging friction-faces 1 1 of the followers engaging the converging frictionfaces 2 3 of the friction-blocks, forcing the friction-blocks apart, and causing the members (or cups) 2 3 3 of the spring-pocket to telescope, thus compressing the spring at and increasing the pressure contact of the friction-faces of the friction-blocks and followers in proportion to the load. It will be noted that the outward movement of the frictionblocks, if desired, may be limited only by the cheek-plates or side plates A A of the drafttimbers and that the construction is such that the draft-gear may be wholly within the plane of the draft-timbers, and, if desired, a single nest of standard springs of known capacity may be utilized as the yielding support for both friction-blocks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a draft-gear for cars, the combination of longitudinally-movable followers, interposed laterallymovable friction -blocks, a transversely disposed telescoping springpocket, and a spring within said telescoping spring-pocket, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a draft-gear for cars, the combination with friction-blocks one of which is provided with a cup and adjacent slots, and the other with cup-sections which pass through the slots of the first-named member, of a spring, and means for confining the spring in the cup of the friction-blocks, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In a draft-gear for cars, the combination with followers having opposed wedge faces, of interposed friction-blocks having inclined friction-faces which receive the wedge faces of the followers, a centrally and transversely disposed spring-pocket comprised of telescoping members carried by the friction-blocks, andaspriugconfined within the spring-pocket of the friction-blocks, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In a draft-gear for cars, the combination with a friction-block 2 having a cup 2 and slots 2, and a friction-block 3 having the cupopening 3 and the cup-sections 3, of a spring, a cap for confining the spring, and followers which engage the friction-blocks, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
