NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SOHLEGELMILOH, OF ARTERN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO AKTIEN-MASCHINENFABRIK KYFFHAUSERHIITTE VORM. PAUL REUSS, OF ARTERN, GERMANY.
CHIMNEY-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,735, dated Augus 2, 1904.
Application filed December 8, 1903. Serial No. 184,345. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LRoBERT SoHLEenLMILon, director, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Artern, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohimney-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of the present invention constitutes an improvement in chimney-tops with a turning cap in which a support built into the chimney is provided with a bearing-socket covered at the top and closed at the bottom, in which rotates a spindle held by a ring and acting as a pivot, whereby the bearing-socket forms a permanent lubricating-bearing. The innovation consists in the arrangement that the ring is rigidly fixed on the spindle, so that the latter acts as a piston and protects the cap against being blown down by a storm. At the same time the friction is not distributed over the circumference of the spindle, but over the circumference of the ring.
The drawing represents a form of construction of such a chimney-top in a longitudinal section.
The bearing-socket it is aflixed to the sup port a and receives the axle c', fixed to the cap g. The axle 2', which, with its point I acts as a pivot, carries at a suitable height a bearing-ring or, closely fitting in the socket b, so that the bearing at this place acts as a spindle-bearing and gives to the cap a steady movement. The free space 9' between the socket and the axle 2? is filled in the usual manner with a suitable lubricant offering a sufficient resistance to the influences of the temperature and weather, so that all the friction-surfaces re main constantly greased and their wear and tear is reduced to a minimum. The bearing is consequently permanently lubricated. As the space 1* is filled with a lubricant and the ring m closely fits in h, a resistance is opposed to the withdrawal of the axle 2: from the socket, as in that case a vacuum formed then below the ring on would have to be overcome.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
A chimney-top with a turning cap having a bearing-socket afiixed to a support (6 in which socket, closed at the bottom and covered over at the top, rotates a spindle laterally held in position by a ring and at the top fixed to the cap, said ring being rigidly fixed on the spindle for the purpose of causing the latter to act in the manner of a piston in the space below the ring and thereby prevent the cap from being blown down by a storm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The foregoing specification signed at Berlin this 25th day of November, 1903.
