SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,406, dated August 2, 1904;. Application filed February 1, 1904. Serial 'No. 191,618. No niodel- Be it known that I, SAMUEL \YdYiixna citizen of the United States, residing at Alvada, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful improvemen ts in Hearing for Cranes, l)erricks,or other Machines; and ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved system of gearing for cranes, derricks. and other machines; and it consists of the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described. and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure '1 is a side elevation of a swinging crane, showing the application of the invention. Fig. is a similar view of the opposite side of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view thrmigh the boom. looking toward the mast of the derrick.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a derrick or crane, which may be of any suitable construction, but which is here shown as consisting of an upright mast 2, which is pivotally mounted at its lower end in a suitable base to which it may be also firmly guyed and braced. The mast is preferably formed of upright parallel bars spaced apart by spacing-blocks l and securely fastened together by bolts To the lower end of the mast is hinged the lower end of a boom 6, which is also formed of parallel bars spaced apart by blocks 7 and connected by bolts 8. Near the upper or outer end of the boom is secured the end of a cable 9. which extends back through the mast and over a pulley l0, journaled therein, and then downwardly, where it is connected to a small windlass or winch 12, by which it may be wound or unwound to raise and lower the boom.
in the outer end of the boom is mounted a pulley l3, and to the upper end of the mast is hung a pulley-block ll. Over the pulley l3 and through the block H is adapted to pass a hoisting-cable .15, the end of which passes downwardly from the pullcy-block and is connected to a winding drum l6, which is mounted between the upright bars of the mast on a shaft 17, which is journaled in said bars.
On one end of the shaft 17, on the outside of the mast. is eccentrically mounted a spur gear-wheel 1b, and on the opposite end of the shaft is secured a similarlv-mounted gearwheel '19. The wheels 18 and 15) are eccentrically mounted on the shaft 17 in reversed positions that is. in such a manner that the. longer radii of the same will extend in opposite directions.
Below the shaft 17 is mounted a similarlydisposed shaft 20, on the ends of which are loosely mounted eccentrically-disposed spur gear-wheels 2i and 22, which are also arranged with their long radii extending in opposite directions and are adapted to mesh with the wheels is and 12), mounted above the same.
The pair of wheels on each side of the mast are so arranged that the teeth opposite the long radius of one wheel mesh with the teeth opposite the short radius of the other wheel, and when the long radii of the wheels on one side of the. mast extend downwardly the long radii of the wheels on the opposite side extend upwardly.
The diameter of the wheels on both sides of the mast is the same. and the wheels are all circular, and while but two setsof the same are l shown the number may be increased indelinitely. The wheels being all of the same diameter, the speed of all will be the same.
The lower set of wheels are used as drivers and are provided at a point in line with their longest radius with wrist-pins .23, to which may be connected the pitman-rods from a motor or other source of power. (Not shown.)
The lower set of wheels 21 and are loosely mounted on their shafts, as would be all intermediate wheels between these and the upper set in and it). which are lixed on their shaft,which is turned by said wheels, together with the wiiulingalrum 1b, which is also fixed on said shaft.
in the arrangement of a hoisting mechanism, as herein described, it will be seen that the eccentric mounting of the wheels produces a greatly-increasial leverage, and by the pcculiar arrangement of the Wheels on each side of the mast, as herein described, a regular even movement is given to all of the wheels,
and the stopping of the same on dead-centers is prevented. By increasing the number of wheels a greater amount of leverage may be obtained, by which very heavy loads may be raised, and which by swinging the crane may be delivered at any point desired.
While the arrangement of gearing is herein shown in connection with a crane or derrick, it is obvious that the same may be applied to machinery of various kinds to increase the I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A system of gearing comprising two shafts, one being a fixed and the other a rotary shaft, a pair of circular gears eccentrically keyed to the rotary shaft in reverse order so that the long radii of the same project in opposite directions, a second pair of circular gears eccentrically mounted so as to turn loosely on the fixed shaft and also disposed with their long radii projecting in opposite directions, said second pair of gears meshing with the first-named pair of gears, the teeth adjacent to the long radii of one pair of wheels being adapted to engage the teeth adjacent to the short radii of the other pair, substantially as described.
