To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of rilliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Mechanism for Overhead Traveling Cranes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the hoist mechanism for overhead traveling cranes, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a crane embodying my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are diagrammatic views of the hoist drums, hook block and hoist ropes, and Fig. 4L is a view in plan of the drums.
In cranes designed for heavy loads or high lifts, a large number of parts of ropes are necessary between the trolley and hook block in order to carry the load, and the drums are necessarily so long that it limits the appreach of the hook block to the side of the building. The crane for which this improvement was designed has alifting capacity of three hundred and fifty tons and two hundred and fifty feet lift, and requires thirty two parts of one and quarter inch rope supporting the hook block between the latter and the trolley, so that in this crane the drums must take care of over eight thousand feet of rope, which if used on a crane as ordinarily constructed, would require a drum of such length as would prevent the approach of the hook block within proper working distance of the sides of the building.
IVith my improvement the trolley 5 is mounted on the crane bridge 6 which latter travels 011 an overhead track and the trolley travels lengthwise the bridge in the usual and well known manner.
Mounted on the trolley are four parallel drums 7, 7, 7 and 7 arranged with'their axes in the direction of the travel of the trolley on the bridge. The outer drums 7 and 7 are each driven by a motor 8 which are connected electrically so as to operate Specification of Letters Patent.

in unison and at the same speed so that in the event one fails the other can in the emergency, sustain the load. The outer drums 7 and 7 are connected by gear wheels with the adjacent drums 7 and 7 and the latter have intermeshing gears 9 and 9 so that all the drums operate in unison and at the same speed.
A cable or rope 145 is attached at one end to drum l and passes down and around a sheave 10at the same side of the hook or hoist block 11, up and around sheave 12 on the trolley; down and around a second sheave 10 on hoist block and so on around several sheaves 10 and 12 and is made fast its other end to either the drum 7 or block 11. A second rope or cable 14: is connected with drum 7 and passes around an equal number of sheaves 10 at the side of the hook block carrying the sheaves for the rope 1d and is secured at its other end to drum 7 or block 11. A rope or cable 143 is attached to drum 7 and passes around a series of sheaves 10 and 12 at the adjacent side of the hook block 11 and trolley and is secured its other end to drum 7 or to block 11, and another rope or cable 14 is secured to drum 7* and passes around a series of sheaves 10 12*, and is made fast at its other end to drum 7 or the hook block. When the two ends of the ropes are secured to the drums, I may instead of attaching each rope to two drums as above explained, attach both ends to one drum so that each rope will be connected with one drum only, or as above explained, one end of each rope may be made fast to a drum and the other end to the hook block. Instead of using four ropes, two may be used one being attached to drum 7, reeved around the entire series of sheaves l0 and 12 and secured at its other end to drum 7, and the other rope secured at one end to drum 7 reeved around all the sheaves 10 and l2 and secured at its other end to drum 7". In the present instance I show thirty two parts of ropes between the upper sheaves 12 and 12 and the lower sheaves l0 and l0 which are necessary to sustain the loads, and provide the necessary double drum type of cranes noW in use, Without making the drums of such lengths as would materially limit the floor space over Which the crane Would be available *for'lifting and depositing Work.
With four drums to receive the hoist ropes the size of the drums may be kept Within reasonable limits andthus permit of a close approach of the hook block :to either si'de oif the building and serve substantially the entire floor space traversed by'the crane.
Having fully K described my 'invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lea ters-Paterft, is
1. in an overheadcrane adapted for long lifts, the combination of a trolley having four parallel connected drums, and "two series of sheaves, a hook block having two series 10f sheaves, ropes connected with "the two a'cl-j'acent drums at one side of the trolley and passing around one set of sheaves on the hook block and trolley and ropescolr nected to "the "two adjacent drums at the other side o'f the trolley-and passing around the other set of sheaves on the hook block and trolley.
