SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,301, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed November 5, 1903. Serial No. 179,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LGEORGE FREDRICK I/VAT- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Antiradiating Furnace-Gate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnace-gates, whereby the rays of heat penetrating a furnace-gate and the absorbing of such heat-rays by the coal in the furnace-hopper is reduced to a minimum and liability of ignition of the coal in the furnace-hopper and damage from smoke into the furnace or boiler room prevented. I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a front view of my antiradiating furnace-gate adapted to a furnace provided with revolving grate-bars. Fig. 2 shows a transverse view of the same. Fig. 3 also shows a transverse view with parts left off to clearly show the parts illustrated in the said view.

The sides A and the revolving grate-bars g constitute a part of a furnace mechanism to which my antiradiating furnace-gate B is shown adapted thereto so as to cover the furnace-mouth. and the said antiradiating furnace-gate is of a box form and has an inner and central web .7), situated longitudinally and reaching from one end to within a short distance of the opposite end of the said antiradiating furnace-gate.
The antiradiating furnace-gate B is suspended and held in position to cover the mouth of the furnace by the suspended screw-rods 0 taking into the nuts 0, confined in pockets formed upon the said gate B. and the suspended screw-rods are rigidly attached to the gear-wheels c, that are supported from the brackets '1', secured to the sides A, constituting a part of the furnace mechanism. The gear-wheels 0, rigidly attached to the upper ends of the screw-rods 0. mesh with similar gear-wheels a, situated upon and firmly attached to the horizontal shaft f, taking into the pillows a and provided with a hand-wheel j. The antiradiating furnace-gate is also provided with an inlet-pipe 7) for water and an outlet-pipe 7), also for water, and each of the said pipes 7) 7) is provided with expansionboxes (Z (1, that the said pipes take into to admit of any required adjustment of the said furnace-gate to the face of the revolving gratebars g. The said furnace-gate is also provided with a thermometer I that the furnaceman can regulate the supply of water passing through the interior of the gate with reference to its temperature that the water does not become too high in temperature or pressure. The pop or blow-off valve 1: prevents the pressure of the water passing through the said furnace-gate B from becoming greater than the amount set for the said valve to blow off at and insures safety in the use of the antiradiating furnace-gate B.
Having described the several parts of my antiradiating furnace-gate, the objects avoided and objects attained are more fully described as follows: Coal being supplied to the hopper H is confined between the sides A, the incline sheet or plate it, and the antiradiating furnace-gate B. and these several parts virtually form the coal-hopper H of the furnace, and when an ordinary metal plate or frame backed with brick forms the gate to the furnace-mouth the heat from the furnace radiating from such metal plate or frame backed with brick is often suflicient to ignite the coal in the hopper H. causing unnecessary smoke in the furnace or boiler room and always emitting an unnecessary amount of radiant heat into the stokers quarters.
The antiradiating furnace-gate B being of a box form and internally supplied with cold water constantly liowing through the said furnace-gate is a means whereby the heat taken up by the said antiradiating-gate B is rapidly removed and carried away bytheflow of water passing internally through the said gate, whereby the coal in the hopper H is prevented from overheating and igniting in the said hopper, insuring more satisfactory re sults in the use of the coal and more comfortable conditions for the Stoker to perform his Work or duty.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An antiradiating furnace-gate B, of a box form provided with a horizontal divisionweb b, of the screw-rods 0, taking into nuts 0, and suspended from gear-wheels a", meshing with the gear-wheels 6, attached to the shaft f, supported from the pillows a, of the frame A, substantially as shown and described.
