GEORGE vV. MAREMBECK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
AIR-HEATING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,902, dated December 25, 1883.
' Applicagion filed June 11, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LIAREM- BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Air-Heating Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to so construct an air-heating furnace as to insure extended air-heating surfaces without unduly increasing the height of the structure.
The invention also comprises minor features of construction with the view of controlling the combustion and readily cleaning the fines.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved furnace; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 1 2; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 3 4, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan on the line 5 6.
A is the outer casing of the furnace, inclosing the air-heating chamber 13. This casing may be of sheet metal or of brick, and is furnished with the usual openings, at, for the entrance of cold air, and with branches 1) for the escape of the heated air.
\Vithin the chamber B is suitably supported the cylindrical casing D of the combustionchamber F, and within the latter is a cylindrical casing, G, the chamber Hwithin which receives a supply of cold air from a chamber, K, at-the rear of the furnace, and discharges the heated air into a chamber, J, at the front of the same, the air being conveyed from the latter chamber by suitable pipes. The annular combustion-chamber communicates with the fire-place M, and with an exit-pipe, N, extending longitudinally through the chamber H, and communicating with an adjacent chimney, longitudinal deflecting-plates d in the chamber F causing the products of combustion to take a circuitous course in their passage from the fire-place to the outlet, so as to be brought into contact with all portions of the casings D and G. The chamber H is contracted above the fire-place,in order to permit the free flow of the products of combustion into the chamber F, and to provide for direct draft. The deflecting-plates d have near their front ends valves f, on opening which the products of combustion are at liberty 'to pass directly upward, so as to enter the pipe N. Thefront end of the pipe N passes through the casing of the chamber J and has a detachable cap, 9, on removing which access may be had to the pipe for the removal of soot therefrom, and the front plate, I, of the heater has doors h in line with the plates d, for a similar purpose, and also for permitting access to the valves f when it becomes necessary to operate the latter for the purpose of controlling the draft.
It will be noticed that in the above heater two volumes of air are being simultaneously heated-one by contact with the outer casing of the combustion-chamber, and the other by 65 contact with the inner casing of the same and with the exit-pipe N.
In a furnace constructed as shown heating surface may be extended indefinitely by in creasing the length of the structure withoutincreasing its height or width an advantageous feature, as the apartments in which heaters are usually located are frequently low and narrow, but are. generally so long that longitudinal extension of the structure is not objectionable. Moreover, economy is insured, as the same front and rear castings can be used in building heaters of different sizes.
The contracted portion of the casing G of the combustionchamber may be provided with blocks or slabs of fire-brick to prevent warping of the same by the intense heat to which it is subjected.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the fire-place, the inner and outer heating-chambers, H and B, the annular combustion-chamber F between the two, the exit-pipe N, and longitudinal deflecting-plates d in said combustion-chamber, as set forth.
2. The combination of the outer casing, A, and the end plates inclosingthe heating-chamber B, with the fire-place M, the casing D, inclosing the chamber F, and the casing G, inclosing the heating-chamber H, said casing G having abovethe fire-place an offset forming a combustion-chamber communicating with the front end of the chamber F, as set forth.
3. The combination of the fire-place, the inner and outer heating-chambers, H and B, the mo exit-pipeN, and the annular eombustion-ehain- In testimony whereof I have signed my name ber F, having deflecting-plates d, with valves to this specification in the presence of two sub- IO f, as set forth. scribing Witnesses.
4:. The combination ofthe fire- )lace, the in- 7 5 ner and outer heating-chambers, H and B, the MAREMBDOI annular combustion-chamber F, having (16- Witnesses: fleeting-plates d, and the front plate, P, hav- J OHN E. PARKER,
ing doors h in line with said plates, as set forth. 1 HARRY SMITH.
