3PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,756, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed March 14, 1904. Serial No. 197,994:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. STRATTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
As is well known, mattresses, because of their size, shape, and texture, are difficult to handle that is, to turn over or carry from place to placeand several varieties of means for affording handholds at the edges of the mattress have been proposed.
The object of the present invention, therefore, is an improvement in this direction; and the invention is embodied in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a mattress provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detail of a wire frame that can be employed in the manufacture of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a face view of a supplemental piece of fabric, showing how it is cut to provide the handholds of my invention.
The body 1 of the mattress is of course of the usual form and construction; but supplemental pieces 2 and 2 of ticking or other fabric are stitched, as indicated at 2, to the edge of the mattress at the sides and ends. These supplemental pieces are notched, indented, or cut out on arcs, preferably in staggered arrangement on its opposite edges, to form the handholds 3. The arc-shaped edges constituting the handholds are not of course stitched to the body of the mattress, but are left free, forming pockets, so that the fingers of the hand can be inserted between the fabric of the body of the mattress and the fabric of the supplemental or handhold piece. The edges of the handheld can be corded, if desired, and
' the cords thereof attached to cord sewed along the corners of the mattress. Greater stiffness of the handhold can be secured, if desired, by using a wire frame similar to that of which a portion is indicated in Fig. 2. In this frame the wires 4. are to be sewed into the horizontal corners and the wire 4 In the vertical corners of the mattress, while the wlres 43 are sewed into the arc-shaped handheld portions of the What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a mattress, the combination with the edge thereof, of a supplemental piece of ticking stitched to and substantially covering the edge thereof and having its edge indented to form handholds.
2. In a mattress, the combination with the edge thereof of a supplemental piece of ticking substantially covering the edge thereof, and unstitched portions in edge of said supplemental piece forming handholds.
3. In a mattress, the combination with the edge thereof, of a supplemental piece of ticking stitched to and substantially covering the edge thereof and having both its edges indented to form handholds.
4. In a mattress, the combination with the edge thereof, of a supplemental piece of ticking stitched to and substantially covering the edge thereof having both its edges indented in staggered arrangement to form handholds.
5. In a mattress, the combination with the edge thereof, of a supplemental piece of ticking stitched to and substantially covering the edge thereof, and unstitched portions in the edge thereof forming handholds, and cords or wires in the corners of the mattress and cords or wires in the handholds secured to the cords or wires in the corners of the mattress.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
