SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 765,439, dated July 19, 1904.
Application filed February 12, 1904. Serial No. 193,272. tNo model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DIoKsoN PIKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stanford University, county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bottles for merchantable liquids and to certain improvements therein to protect their marks and contents from fraudulent use.
My improvement consists in providing a lateral nipple on the bottles neck opposite the cork having a recess to receive a mark or label, an aperture between this recess and the bottles cork, through which the label or mark is connected to the cork, and a transparent cap or cover on the nipple and over the mark or label, whereby the latter is visible, but hermetically sealed, not removable except by means of the cork, and is not replaceable or even if replaceable could not be attached to the cork.
The objects of my invention are to prevent the fraudulent use of bottles by refilling them with other than their original and designated contents, accomplishing the purpose of non-refillable devices, also protecting the mark and label from being tampered with or substituted, but not destroying the bottle for other uses.
To these ends I construct bottles as set forth in the following specification and illustrated by accompanying drawings, that form a part of this specification.
Figure I is a front view or elevation of a bottle-neck provided with my improvement; Fig. II, a vertical section through Fig. I at a right angle thereto; Fig. III, a side view of Fig. II with the bottle-cork partially withdrawn; Fig. IV, an enlarged section through the cork with the label or mark connected thereto, and Fig. V a front view of the label as itappears when ready for insertion.
In applying this invention the neck 2 of the bottle 1 is formed with an open lateral recessed nipple 3, at the bottom of which and opposite the cork 4 is an aperture 5, as shown in the section Fig. II. The lateral extension or nipple 3 is provided with a translucent cap or covering plate 6 for hermetically closing the nipple adapted to be cemented or fused in place when applied, so it cannot be removed without fracturing the parts. In a recess beneath this cap or cover 6 is placed a mark or label 7, made of any flexible material and printed with any desired legend, as in Fig. V, such inscription being plainly legible through the cap or cover 6, as seen in Fig. I. The label or mark 7 is attached to the cork 4 preferably by means of a small cord or wire8 and a pin 9, so that when the cork is drawn the label 7 will be pulled through the aperture 5 and follow the cork, or in other cases will be displaced and destroyed.
To secure the passage of the label 7 through the aperture 5, the cord or wire 8 is passed through a hole 10 in the center of the label and fastened at several points around its periphery, as shown in Figs. IV and V.
The operation of filling is as follows: The bottle is. charged with its intended contents and the cork 4c is inserted in the usual manner, preferably to pass below the aperture 5, so the label 7 will not be exposed to the liquid in the bottle. The label 7 is then inserted in the recess beneath the cap 6 and the pin 9 is'pushed into the side of the cork 4, as shown in Fig. IV. The transparent cap 6 is then cemented or fused on the nipple 3 and the op eration is complete. drawn, the mark or label 7 is pulled through the aperture 5, as indicated in Fig. III, and cannot be replaced or substituted for fraudulent purposes.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bottle, a neck having a recess formed on its side opposite the place occupied by the cork, for the reception of a distinctive mark or label, an aperture through the neck at the bottom of said recess, a translucent cap for sealing the mouth of said recess, and a means for connecting the inserted mark or label with the cork through said aperture, whereby the When the cork is withsaid mark is visibly tampered with by the Withdrawal of the cork, substantially as specified.
2. In a bottle, a neck having a recess formed on its side opposite the place occupied by the cork, for the reception of a distinctive transient mark or label, an aperture through the neck at the bottom of said recess, a translucent cap for sealing said recess over said mark,
I O and a means for connecting the said mark with the cork whereby the mark is drawn through the aperture by the act of Withdrawing the cork, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo sub- I 5 scribing Witnesses.
