IMPROVEMENT IN WRENGHES,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY'(.lONCIflRll':
Be it known that I, EIA. SMEA, of.Tioga, in the county of Tioga., and Stat-e of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my wrench.
The natureof 'my invention consists in the employmentoil avcain to hold theimovablejati/ in position,.sub
` To enable others skilled in the art Ito ava and operation. Y
A represents the handle, and B the statonaryjawfof VAmyojrench. Nearly'tivo-thirds of the-hnclle A are rectangular, and serrated on its upper side', as seen inf 1.' C represents-the moveblejavr, which is made to slide on thehandle, and furnished at itsI outer end, ivhere it embraces the` handle, with the teeth d, which are designed to fitin the serrations h' on handleA. Qnthe. lower side of handle, and opposite 'tothe teeth nl, is
v pivoted thecam e; said com lis furnished with spring s, .which rests at itsendou the inner surface of'jaw Q, asA
seen in the drei-ving. Attached toicam e is thethumb-piece g, by' which'thercram'is operated.
I When it is desired to adjust thejaw Gto a. nut of any given size, the operator will grasp the round part of the handle with the fore-lingers of his-right han@ andpress down the thumb-piece g until it-rests on the jaw C, and this will disengage the teeth from between-the*serrationsfh onhendle Now, with the right handv slide the jaw C to the desired place, and by raising the thumb Lfrom g, the teeth d will enter between the serrations 7L, andl the jaw C remain firmly fixed in its positionr'.' I l i I am aware that springs have been employed to hold the jaw and prevent it from slipping; but 'asta spring is lexible, itis liablev to give way when. the jaw is under great pressure. But in my wrench it will be seen that when the teeth 0l are in theserrations h, it is impossilile'for thermovable janv C t'o move'from its position until the cam is operated for that. purpose. Y.
Whet'I claim as new, andjlesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cam e, fer-holding-the slidingjaw C, as herein specified.
'In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as myown, I' ailg my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. A.' SMEAD'.
