PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ARENTS, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO CONTINENTAL TOBACCO COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,221, dated July 19, 1904.
Application filed April 14, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ARENTS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holders, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder for a roll of paper or other material from which it may be desired to sever portions of greater or less length. I
The invention has been made especiallywith the idea of providing a convenient pocketcase for a strip or web of cigarette-paper in the form of a roll, so that portions of a proper length for rolling a cigarette may be readily draown from the holder and detached from the we V The accompanying drawings show a preferred form of holder embodying the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a holder with a length of paper which has been drawn from the holder shown as being severed therefrom. Fig. 2 is a side view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casing for holding asuitable length of paper. This casing is preferably of cylindrical form, as shown, and is preferably formed of a thin metal sheet bent to form an open-ended cylinder 10 with overlapping and underlapping portions a and Z) and having its ends closed by means of caps 11 and 12. One of these caps, as 11, is removably secured to the cylinder 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The overlapping and underlapping portions a and b are slightly separated, so as to form a delivery-passage between them, and the overlapping portion a is formed with a finger-opening 18 to permit the edge of the paper to be projected beyond the edge of the overlapping portion a by means of the finger of the user engaging the paper through this opening. The end of the paper Serial No. 152,557. (No model.)
having been projected from beneath the edge of the overlapping portion a, .a suitable length ofpaper may then be drawn from the holder and severed from the remaining portion of the paper by tearing the paper against the edge of the overlapping portion a, as indicated in Fig. 1. Then when it is desired to separate another length of paper from the web the edge of the paper is again projected by means of the finger engaging the paper through the opening 13 and the paper drawn out and separated, as before.
Paper-holders of this class are especially adapted for use as pocket paper-holders; but difiiculty has been experienced heretofore in their use, for this purpose especially, on account of the end of the web of paper being retracted through the delivery-passage by the jarring of the holder, thus preventing the drawing of further lengths of paper from the holder without taking off the cover and repositioning the.
end of the web of paper in the delivery-passage. Various expedients have been resorted to for overcoming this difficulty; but all such expedients have been, as far as I am aware, more or less complicated and impractical. For overcoming this difiiculty I provide a simple and efficient means consisting of a spring bearing-finger 15 for bearing on the paper in the delivery-passage, preferably positioned to engage the paper just before the latter reaches the finger-opening l3 and acting, preferably, to press the paper against the underlapping portion bof the casing. This spring-finger may be formed in any suitable manner, but is preferably formed, as shown, by making parallel cuts 16 in the overlapping portion of the casing, said cuts extending, preferably, circumferentially from the inner edge of the opening 13, as shown. The tongue thus formed is then bent so as to bear with a surficient pressure against the paper as the latter passes beneath the tongue to prevent any accidental movement of the paper through the delivery-passage due to jarring of the holder or from other causes, while at the same time permitting the paper to be readily moved through the passage by the pressure of the finger thereon through the finger-opening 13 or by pulling on the projected end of the paper.
What I claim is 1. A holder for a roll of paper formed of a cylindrical casing having a cireumferentiallyextending delivery-passage through which the paper may be drawn from the holder, a finger-opening in the outer wall of the deliverypassage, and a tension device for bearing on the paper in said passage, substantially as described.
2. A holder for a web of paper having a delivery-passage through which the paper may be drawn from the holder, a finger-opening in the outer wall of the delivery-passage, and a spring finger 16 formed by slots in the outer wall of the delivery-passage extending from the edge of the linger-opening, substantially as described.
3. A holder for a roll of paper formed of a cylindrical casing having a removable end and having acircumferentially-extending passage through which the paper may be drawn from the holder, a finger-opening in the outer wall of the delivery-passage, and a springfinger for pressing the paper against the inner wall of the delivery-passage near the inner edge of the finger-opening, substantially as described.
4:. A holder for a roll of paper formed of an open-ended cylinder 10 having overlapping and underlapping portions (6 and b forming a delivery-passage between them, and end pieces 11 and 12 one of which is removable, said cylinder having a finger-opening 13 in the overlapping portion b, and a springfinger 16 formed by slits in the overlapping portion a extending circumferentially from the inner edge of the finger-opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
