provements in presses for use in pickling vegetables, meats, &c.; and its objectis to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be readily attached to a barrel or jar and which will hold the articles to be pickled below the surface of the brine or other liquid contained within the receptacle.

The invention consists of a cross-bar having attachments of novel construction for securing it to opposite sides of the receptacle, and arranged on this cross-bar is a holding device adapted to automatically engage a shank extending from the follower of the press.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a barrel having my improved press in position therein, the cross-bars of the press being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sec tion on line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through the crossbar and showing the locking device in elevation.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a barrel or other suitable receptacle for the reception of material to be pickled, and the upper edge of this receptacle is adapted to be engagedat opposite sides by clamps of novel construction. Each of these clamps comprises a block 2 and an L-shaped clamping-plate 3, said plate being adjustably connected to the block by means of a bolt 4,

having an adjusting device 5 thereon. The plate 3 is adapted to bear upon one face of the receptacle 1 and clamp the edge of the receptacle against the block 2. The hinge 6 is secured to one of the blocks 2 and to a crossbar 7 which is slotted longitudinally, as shown at 8, and the opposite end of which is adapted to be engaged and locked by a button 9, arranged upon a stem 10, projecting from the other block 2. A base-block 11 is adjustably secured upon the cross-bar 7 by means of clamping-bolts 12, extending through the slot 8, and this base-block has an aperture 13, through which projects a shank 14, secured to the center of a follower 15. This shank has ratchet-teeth 16 formed along one edge thereof, and at the inner end of the series of teeth 16 are provided rectangular recesses 17. A U-shaped locking-strip 18 is mounted upon the block 11 adjacent the aperture 13 and is formed of spring metal, said strip being provided witlrspring-coils 19 to hold it normally in contact with the toothed edge of the shank 14. A bail 20 is pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the strip 18 and forms a handle by means of which said strip can be readily withdrawn from engagement with the shank 14.

In using the device herein described the blocks 2 and plates 3 are secured to opposite sides of the receptacle 1 by means of the bolts 1 and clamping devices 5. The slotted crossbar 7 is then fastened across the end of the receptacleand held in such position by means of the button 9. Prior to this operation the shank 14 is inserted in the aperture 13, and therefore after the cross-bar has been secured in place this shank is pressed downward, so as to bring the follower in contact with the solid contents of the receptacle and hold them below the surface of the liquid contents thereof. During the downward movement of the shank 14: the teeth 16 thereof will slip under the locking-strip 18; but this strip will automatically engage said teeth successively, so as to prevent the return movement of the shank. When it is desired to raise the shank, it is necessary to first grasp the bail 20, so as to swing the locking-strip 18 away from the shank. Said shank can then be moved upward, and when it is desired to lock the follower and shank in raised position the strip 18 is placed inengagement with one of the rectangular recesses 17. When the device is not in use as a follower,the same can be swung outward in an inverted position, with the outer or free end of the shank 14 in contact with the ground,

and the follower 15 then forms a table adjacent the receptacle and which can be used for any desired purpose.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a receptacle; of a detachable hinged cross-bar connected thereto, means for securing the barin position upon the receptacle, a spring locking-strip secured to the cross-bar, a bail extending therefrom, a follower, and a toothed shank extending from the follower and normally engaged by the locking-strip.

2. In a press attachment, the combination with blocks and clamping-plates adjustably connected to the blocks; of a cross-bar hinged to one of the blocks, a follower, a toothed shank extending from the follower and slidably mounted within the cross-bar and means for automatically locking the shank within the cross-bar.

3. The combination with areceptaclehaving clamps detachably secured to opposite sides thereof; of a cross-bar hinged to one of the clamps and adapted to be engaged by the other clamp, a base-block upon the cross-bar, a follower within the receptacle, a shank extending therefrom and having teeth on one edge and recesses adjacent the follower, a U-shaped locking-strip upon the base-block and adapted to normally engage one of the teeth, and a bail secured to the strip and forming a bandle, said strip being adapted to normally hold the shank against moving in one direction and to engage one of the recesses and lock the shank against movement in the other direc- WARREN WILLIAMS.
