PATENT OFFICE.
v DRY ING APPARATUS FOR GRAIN-BINS.
. lSPIBKIIEICAlION forming partof Letters Patent No. 764,237, dated uly 5, 1904.
Application and April 1a, 1904.
To all whom, may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER R. HAG- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drying Apparatus for 4Grain-Bins, of-.which the' following is a specification.
tus for grain-bins, and has for its objectv to means of which air may be thoroughly dis.
' thoroughly. dried.
tributed through the grain and the latter The invention is. illustrated in 4the* accompanying drawings, in Whic l Figure i l illustrates` a vertical section throughl the lower/end of a bin-and hopperV l and alsdthrough the drying apparatus. Fig,
'L'designates a receptacle or binofany suitable construction, which inthe presentinstance is provided with a vhppper at, the lower end ja' of which is inwardly inclined to form a V-shaped trough.V An opening a2 is providedin each side of thedhopper, and a sliding door a3 is provided in sai side at each of said open# ings. i Above' the inclined end' the hopper is provided at opposite sides with a substantially circular opening b, and a 'bearing-plate b' is secured to the vertical walls of said hopper at said circular openings, and said plates are each providedwith an opening b2, through which air may pass to the interior. A hori zontal shaft cis supported at opposite ends in said bearing-plates b', .and said4 shaft is'to be revolved in any suitable mannenw vArp'lurality of arms o' yare suitably carried by sald shaft, and said arms vsupport a plurallty of serial No. 203,546. (No model.)
fan-blades shaft. i
Ahex'agonal frame comprises two end plates d, each of which has'a center perforation d' and a plurality of horizontal rods d2, whichv5 connect said plates. Twd iiat metal stiifening-rings d are interposed between the end plates d and serve to keep the rods in a straight horizontal position and parallel with 'the shaftc.4 A wire sheet-screen e is wrapped 60 around the hexagonal frame and completely covers the latter from one end to the other and forms an air-distributing cylinder which surrounds the fan. By reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that this distributing-cylinder exteudsfrom one side of the hope lper to the other and has its ends terminating 1n the circular openings b in the' hopper-walls, andthe perforations'd in the end plates d adjoin or are at the side of the openings b2 in the bearing-plate b. By means of this arranger, ment air may bedrawn through the openings and perforationsal tothe interior of the distributing-chamber as the fan-blades are revolved. The sheet-wire screen e is provided with a plurality of laterally-projecting perforated tubular arms f, which in the present instance project !from the various Hat sides. These arms are preferably formed of wirenet ting, and their outer ends are closed by a plug 80 f', from which an eye f2 projects. Hooks]c3 are secured to the Walls of the hop per, and each Vhookis attached to lone -of the' eyes in the ends of said tubular arms and serves to support the saine.V The inner. ends of the tubular arms are open and are in communication with the interior of the distributing-chamber. When f' the bins and hopper'sare filled with grain, the tubular radiating arms serve as branches through which the air will be conducted and` distributed throughthe grain. In'order to further distribute the air through the bulk of grain, ll provide aplurality of perforated tubes g, eachofwhich connects two adjoining ra` diating armsf, so that the air churned up by the fan will be conducted through the .arms f and Vtubes g and thoroughly, distributed` throughthe Ysurrounding grain.
In the drawings the distributing-cylinder c2, which are revolved with said is illustrated as employing three sets of dis- 10 tributing-arms; but it is tobe understood that a greater or less number may be employed. It is also to be understood that the device. may be used for drying cornor things other than grain. 5
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a receptacle of a perforated cylinder 'in said receptacle, a plurality of perforated tubes radiating from said cylinder and afan device within said cylinder.
2. The combination with a receptacle hav-A 'cured to 'said receptacleand covering said openings and each plate having an opening for l the passage of air; a perforated cylinder extending across said receptacle and having its ends terminating in the side openingsxo-f said receptacle, said cylinder having perforated end plates adjoining the side openings of `said receptacle; a shaft extending through said perforated cylinder and supported in said bearing-plates, and one`or more fan-bladesA carried by said shaft and 'revoluble with theY latter within` said cylinder. l
4. The combination with a'receptacle, of a' shaft extending across said receptacle and ear rying one or more fan-blades; a Vstationary l frame supported within said receptacle and surrounding said shaft and fan; a perforated covering supported by said frame, and a plu rality of perforated tubes radiating from' said covering. Y n JIn testimonywhereof I alx my signature 1n l presence of two witnesses..
