PROCESS OF PREPARING WRAPPERS. R
APPLICATION FILED 00121, 1902;
PATENTED JULY '5, 1904.
Patented July 5, 1904.
PATENT OEEIcE.
ALFRED SHEDLOCK, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
PROCESS OF PREPARING WRAPPERS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,210, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed October 1, 1902. Serial No. 125,506. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LALERED SHEDLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Preparing VVrappers, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
In the manufacture of cigars it is desirable that the wrapper fit the bunch closely and accurately, and particularly that no crevices or openings be left along the overlapping lines of the wrapper which produce what is known in the art as aprons. These aprons not only disfigure the cigar, but interfere with its draft. A- cigar-wrapper consists of a thin flat section of leaf cut to a proper shape, and
. in placing it upon a cigar it is customary to strain it about the bunch, so that it may fit the bunch snugly and also take the shape of the bunch.
The present invention has for its object to improve cigar-wrappers by giving them approximately the shape of the bunch prior to winding them thereupon; and the invention consists in a certain process of preparing wrappers and applying them to cigars or other analogous articles, as will be hereinafter described and then more fully pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, it will be explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 indicates a former with a cigarwrapper partially applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 represent different modes of transferring the wrapper from the former to the bunch; and Figs. 4 and 5 are end views of Figs. 2 and 3, respectively.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a former, which,as shown, corresponds in shape to that shape of cigar which is ordinarily known to the trade as a perfecto. The shape of the former will, however, vary according to the particular shape of cigar or other article to which the wrapper is to be applied, and it will be further understood that the formerneed not correspond exactly to the shape of the article to be wrapped.
In carrying out the process the wrapper, which is indicated at 2, is first shaped by winding it tightly about the former, the wrapper being thus stretched so that it corresponds to the shape of the former. After the wrapper has been given a set it is rolled from the former onto the bunch. According to the preferred mode of carrying out the invention the wrapper will be transferred from the former to the bunch, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4thatis to say, it will be so wound about the bunch that that side of the wrapper which is outermost upon the former will form the outside of the wrapper when it is applied to the bunch. The wrapper may. however, be wound on the bunch, as indicated in Figs. 3
and 5that is to say, that side of the wrapper which is outermost on the former forming the inside of the wrapper when it is applied to the bunch.
While the process which has been described is especially applicable to preparing wrappers for cigars, it might be used in preparing wrappers for other analogous articles when it is desired that the wrapper shall snugly fit the article to which it is to be applied.
What is claimed is 1. The process of wrapping cigars and analogous articles which consists in winding the wrapper under tension about a former and then winding the wrapper t0 the article, sub stantially as described.
2. The process of wrapping cigars and anal ogous articles which consists in winding the wrapper under tension about a former which corresponds in shape to the article to which the wrapper is to be applied and then winding the Wrapper to the article, substantially as described.
3. The process of wrapping cigars and analogous articles which consists in winding the wrapper under tension about a former and then winding the wrapper to the article with the same side out which was outermost on the former, substantially as described.
4.. The process of wrapping cigars and anal- Correction in Letters Patent No. 764,210.
ogous articles which consists in winding the wrapper under tension about a former which corresponds in shape to the article to which the wrapper is to be applied and then winding the wrapper to the article with the same side out which was outermost on the former, substantially rs described.
5. The process of preparing a cigar-wrapper which consists in shaping the wrapper 10 on a former which approximately corresponds [sEAL] to the configuration of the cigar to which the wrapper is to be applied, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
