To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES WALTER Goocn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shive, in the county of Hamilton and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Cleaner and Gin-Feeder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cotton-cleaning and gin-feeding devices; and it has for its object to'provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, easily operated, and which may be readily attached to and used in connection with any of the various, makes of gins which are generally used:
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. y
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of embodiment of my invention, it being understood, however, that I do not necessarily limit myself to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but reserve the right to any changes, n1odifications,and alterations which may be resorted to within thescope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a cotton-cleaning and gin-feeding device constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional detail view taken on theline 3 3 in Fig. 1. The casing of the improved device comprises a feed-chute 1, a chamber 2, containing a spiked roller 3, and a lower chamber 4, containing a toothed roller 5 and having a screen 6, which is disposed concentrically with said roller 5 and which separates the chamber i from the dust-chamber 7. The casing is provided in front of the roller 5 with a chute 8, constituting the cotton-outlet and which serves to conduct the cotton to the gin 9.
The casing of this improved device is made of suitable width to correspond with the width of the ginin connection with which it is to be used, and it is provided with legs 10, whereby it is suitably supported upon the frame of the gin. It is provided with a bulging front portion 11', forming the chamber 2, in which the roller 3 is disposed, and it has a lower bulging portion 12 to form the front part of the chamber 4:, containing the roller 5. The up per roller 3 is provided with a plurality of annular series of radiating spikes 13, which cooperatewith the teeth of the comb 14:, which latter is hinged at the upper edge of the bulged portion 11, said comb consisting of a rock-' shaft 16, having a plurality of curved teeth which are disposed intermediate the series of spikes 13 upon the roller 3. The rock-shaft 16is extended at one end through the wall of the casing and is provided with a crank 18,
by means of which it may be manipulated to adjust the comb, so as to set the teeth of the latter at any desired distance from the body or core of the roller 3.
Journaled in suitable bearings upon the rear wall of the casing 1 within the part of said casing which constitutes the feed-chute 2 is a rock-shaft 19, carrying within the chute a feed-regulating board or damper 20. The rock-shaft 19 is extended at one end through the casing and carries a crank 21, which is connected pivot-ally with an operating-rod 22, extending through a keeper 23 and having a handle 24, by means of which it may be manipulated so as to effect the proper adjustment of the feed-regulating board or damper.
The roller 5., which is mounted upon a shaft journaled in suitable bearings in the sides of the casing within the chamber or compartment 4;, is provided with a plurality of radiating teeth 25, which are much she ior and more flexible than the spikes 13 upon the roller 3.. The body of the roller 5 is also of larger diameter than the body of the roller-3, and
the teeth of said roller are adapted to cooperate with the screen 6, which is disposed underneath the roller and which separates the space or chamber occupied by said roller from the dust-space 7, as will be readily understood.
The shaft 26, carrying the roller 5, carries at one end a pulley 27, which may be belted to the saw-shaft of the gin or to any other suitable source of power. The shaft-26 car ries at its opposite end a small pulley 28,which is connected, by means of a belt 29, with a larger pulley 30 upon the shaft 31 of the roller 3, to which motion at a rate of speed less than that of the roller 5 is thus transmitted.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the device is in operation, cotton is fed thereto in any suitable well-known manner through the feed-chute 1, the feed being regulated by the position of the feed-board 20, which is capable of ready and extensive adjustment, so that in the event of overfeeding from any cause the feed may be instantly reduced or checked. The feed of cotton to my improved cleaning device, however, is not regulated by the feed board-or damper 2O alone, but is also lar ely regulated by the position of the comb 1st relative to the spiked roller 3 and the feed-board. It will be seen that by turning the rock-shaft 16, which constitutes the back of the comb 14, upon its axis the teeth of the comb may move either toward or from the edge of the feed board or damper, thus regulating the size of the opening between the comb and the edge of the damper through which cotton fed into the feed chute will be permitted to pass, When the teeth of the comb are moved in the direction of the edge of the feed-board, only a small portion of the spikes of the roller 3 will be permitted to protrude between the teeth of the comb, and the feed will thus be relatively slow. .lVhen, on the contrary, the rock-shaft 16 is manipulated so as to bring the teeth of the comb 14 in the direction of the body or core of the spiked roller, the spikes of the latter will protrude between the said teeth, and the latter having been moved away from the'edge ot' the feed-board, so as to leave a larger opening for the passage of cotton, it is obvious that the cotton will pass into the machine much more rapidly than before.
By the action of the spiked roller 3 the cotton is forced 0r tugged through the feed-opening and is thereby loosened and disintegrated, 'so that sand, dust, and the like will readily separate therefrom. The rotation of the roller 3 carries the cotton in a downward direction until it is taken hold of by the toothed roller 5, whereby it is rapidly carried in a loose and disintegrated state over the screen 6, through which sand and dust and foreign particles will pass into the compartment 7 which is provided with suitable valve-controlled exits 31 and 32, through which it passes to a place of deposit or to a conveyer, whereby it may be carried out of the way. The cotton after passing over the screen 6 is thrown by the roller 5 in the direction of the bulged portion or shield 12 of the casing, whereby it is deflected upon the chute or spout 8,from which it passes to the gin.
It will be readily understood that the rotation of the roller 5 being much more rapid thanthat of the roller 3, the cotton will be operated upon by said roller 5 in a relatively loose state and that it will be readily discharged by the centrifugal action of the roller against the shield 12, whereby it is deflected upon the chute 8 without the use of brushes or other dofiing means for detaching it from the roller 5. It has been already stated that the teeth 25 of said roller are comparatively thin and flexible. It is also obviously neces* sary that they should be radial with relation to the axis of said roller in order that no resistance to the discharge of the cotton by the centrifugal action of the roller will take place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A casing having a feed-chute, a feed board or damper adjustable in said chute, a roller-chamber below the latter, a spiked roller journaled in said chamber, and a comb mounted pivotally above said roller, said comb having teeth disposed intermediate the spikes of the roller and adjustable between the body of the latter and the edge of the feed board or damper.
2. A casing having a feed-chute, a rollerchamber below said feed-chute and a lower roller-chamber having a screen-bottom and an outlet, a feed board or damper mounted pivotally inthe chute, a spiked roller in the upper roller-chamber, and a comb mounted pivotally above said spiked roller and having teeth adjustable between the body of the latter and the edge of the damper, and a toothed roller disposed in the lower roller-chamber above the screen and behind the outlet.
3. In adevice of the class described, a casing having a feed-chute, an upper roller-chamber, a lower roller-chamber having a screen-bottom and a discharge-opening, and a dustchamber below the screen-bottom and having an outlet, a feed board or damper adjustable in the feed-chute, a spiked roller in the upper roller-chamber, a comb mounted adjustably above said roller, cooperating with the spikes of the latter and adjustable between the body of said roller and the edge of the feed-board, a toothed roller in the lower roller-chamber eeepereting with the screen-bottom, means fe my own 1 have hereto afiixed my signature in transmlttmg metlen from a source of power the presence of two witnesses.
