PATENT OFFICE.
IVERT LARSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHICAGO HARDWARE FOUNDRY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PIANO-PEDAL SUPPORT AND BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,680, dated J une 28, 1904. Application filed February 25, 1904. Serial No. 195,133. (No model-l durable structural formation and combination of parts whereby thepedals are capable each of removal and replacement, lost motion in the pivotal connection taken up, and the pedals maintained in the proper normal position, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the present invention, Figure I is a plan View of set of piano-pedals having the present improvement applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section at line m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation with portions in section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Irepresents'the flat attaching-base of the present bracket, having the usual screw-holes for attachment to the pedal-board of the piano.
2 represents the outer pair, and 3 the inner pair, of standards integrally formed with the attaching-base 1 and provided at their upper ends with pivot-sockets, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
4 represents the outer pair of piano-pedals, and 5 the central piano-pedal. Such pedals are of any usual formand construction and which in the present improvement are provided with transverse'bosses or enlargements 6 and 7 for the transverse pivot-pins of the present construction.
8 and 9 are pivot-rods fixedly secured in transverse orifices in the bosses 7 and 8 of the pedals and having their respective ends made conical to fit conical bearing-recesses formed therefor in the sides of the inner pair of standards 3 and in opposed conical bearing-recesses in the series of alined screws 10 and 11,which have adjustable bearing in screw -threaded transverse orifices in the two outer pair of standards 2 and in one of the inner pair of standards 3, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, and it is a material part of the present construction to construct the said transverse screw-threaded orifices open at one side by means of slots 12 formed in the walls of said orifices and to provide clamping-screws 13 transverse to said slots and to one side of the screw-threaded recesses, as shown, so that by an adjustment of said clamping-screws the said screw-threaded recesses will be contracted around the bearing-screws IO and 11 to firmly clamp the same in position after a proper adjustment of said screws has been effected.
Another material part of the present improvement consists in the arrangement of the middle pivot-rod 9 and its conical bearing-recess and bearing-screw 11 in a plane above the respective outer pivot-rods 8 and their like hearing recesses and screws 10, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order that ready access may be. had to the middle bearing-screw 11 in effecting an adjustment of the same, and as so arranged the middle pedal 5 will have its lateral boss 7 upon itsupper surface, while the outer pedals 4 will have their lateral bosses 6 on their under surfaces, as shown.
14 represents depending lugs on the series of pedals adapted to contact with an end of the base 1 to limit the rocking movement of said pedals in one direction.
15 represents individual spiral springs arranged between the series of pedals and the base 1 and adapted to maintain the outer ends of said pedals in the proper raised condition and with the aforesaid depending lugs 14 in contact with the end of the base, as above set forth.
16 represents opposed annular rims on the pedals and the base to form receiving-sockets for the respective ends of the springs 15 and retain the same in place against accidental disengagement.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a piano-pedal support and bearing, of a base having integral standards formed with conical pivot-sockets, and with open-sided screw-threaded recesses alined with said pivot sockets, clampingscrews arranged transverse of said recesses and adapted to contract the same, a series of screws formed with conical recesses in their ends and arranged in said screw-threaded recesses, a series of pedals formed with transverse bosses, and a series of pivot-rods having conical ends and fixedly secured in transverse orifices in said bosses, substantially as orifices in said bosses, the middle pivot-rod and alined screw having an arrangement in a plane above the outer pivot-rods and alined screws, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination in a piano-pedal support and bearing, of a base having integral standards formed with conical pivot-sockets and with open-sided screw-threaded recesses alined with said pivotsockets, clampingscrews arranged transverse of said recesses and adapted to contract the same, a series of screws formed with conical recesses in their ends and arranged in said screw-threaded recesses, a series of pedals formed with transverse bosses and with a series of depending lugs adapted to contact with an end of the base, a series of coiled springs arranged between the pedals and the base, and a series of pivot-rods having conical ends and fixedly secured in transverse orifices in the bosses aforesaid, substantially as herein described.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 23d day of February, 1904.
V IVERT LARSEN.
