TO ALL WHOM 11 MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DQWLING, of Fair Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecti-- cnt, have invented a new Improvement in Adjustable Boom-Sling; and I do hereby declare the following, whentalten in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of, reference marked thereon,to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in I Figure 1, a top view of the masts, strap, and sling,
Figure 2, a section on line x x, and in Figure 3, a? front view. v p
This invention relates to an improvement in the manner of slinging booms of'yawl-boats, sharpies, &c., and-for yvhat are commonly called'sprit-sails.
This invention is designed to make the boom adjustable, so that it may be made to conform to the shrinking or swelling of the sail, and thus sustain the sail, and also avoid the chafing of the mast, as also to produce a sling which will sustain considerable amount of strain for other purposes; and the invention. consists in the construction of a metallic seat to sustain the boom, the said seat-- constructed so at several points to be pivoted to a swivel on the masts' strap, and so that the said boom may,-by the swivel and pivoting of the seat theretb, turn, as it'were, upon a universal joint. t
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I "will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the mast-band, constructed in two parts, and hinged together, so as to be placed and clamped upon the mast by means of a nut or bolt, 13. Upon one side of the said strap, as at a, a swivel, c'Z, is attached, so as to turn freely in its bearing in the band. D is the booms1ing, which consists of a skeleton metallic frame, provided at one side with several ears,.f, which will fit into the swivel d, and are pivoted in the .said swivel by passing a bolt, z, through the swivel and one of the said earsf, as seen in figs. 1 and 2.-
The boom O is secured with the sling D, and when it is desired to extend the boom, remove the pin 2', and place another of the earsfnearer the'rear end of the sling, within the swivel, and insert the pin z'in the same manner; or; to contract the boom, place one of the ears nearer the outer end, in the swivel, in the same manner. Thus arranged, the boom on the swivel may be turned, as denoted in fig. 1, in either direction horizontally, or, as denoted in fig. 3, by means of the swivel, may be turned to any position vertically; and by this construction there is no liability to the chafing of the mast, and the arrangement is much stronger than that usually employed for supporting the boom.
At the rear end of the sling I arrange a pulley, 19, around which a rope may be placed to aid in the adjustment of the sling. Y
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I,
The sling D, constructed so as. to receive the boom O and provided with ears f, and combined with the swivel d on the masts strap A, and the whole constructed so as to beadjustable'andoperate substantially in the manner herein set forth.
