` State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iashing-Machines, of which improvement the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to an improved washing-machine; and it consists in the certain details of constiuction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central side sectional elevation of my improved wasbing-machine, a part of which is shown in outside elevation, the said View being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the oscillating shaft carrying the rubbing-drum,together with its connected springactuated levers. Fig. 4 is a-plan view of a portion of said shaft. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the spring-levers. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a detailed side sectional elevation showing the manner in which the flexible band carrying the rubbers is connected to the Spring-actuated levers. To put myinvention into practice, and thereby provide la washing-machine that will be simple in construction, strong and du rable,and ofsmall initial cost, I form from wood or other suitable material two side pieces 1, semicircular in form, having forward and rearward eX- tensions 5and 7 to form handles, a metallic bottom 2, suitably attached to form a semicircular tub, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. This tub 1 is mounted upon legs 3, attached to the side walls and strengthened by cross bars and bolts 4, one set of which are arranged in close contact with vthe metallic bottom 2 and serve to support the same. This tub 1 is provided at its forward end with a vertically-arranged piece 6,

to which a wringer may be attached and is covered with a semicircular lid or cover 10, said cover consisting of side pieces and a sheetrnetal top, properly hinged at 9 at the rearv to the body of the tub 1.

1 are a series of rubbers 20 and 21, formed from wooden strips and held at one end by a tenon 22 (see Fig. 2)l and at the other by a curved metallic strip 23, fastened by woodscrews to the side wallof the tub in a manner that any of said strips may be removed when worn and replaced by simply removing said piece 23. These strips forming the rubbers present alternate grooves and projections, the form of which is best seen at Fig. 1 of the drawings and the one end properly chamfercd to drain the Water to the discharge-opening 24 of the tub and the rubbing-board thus cornpletedby end pieces 23. The top or cover 10 is provided with a latch-bar 15, extending from the one side to the other, having a handle 16 and downwardly and inwardly projecting portions 17, which engage with latch-pieces 18, attached to the forward extensions 5 in a manner that the said cover may be securely locked to the tub.

Arranged within the tub and attached to the cover 10 is an oscillating open-ended cylindrical rubbing-drum, which consists of a series of transverse wooden rubbers 20 and 21 similar in form to those formingthe rubbing board below and attached by woodscrews to two flexible bands 25, semicircular in form and T-shaped inl cross-section, the ends of which vare looped, as at 26, Fig. 7, and fitted with a brass bushing 27. These fieXible bands 25 are connected, .by means of bolts 28, to one end of .two curved levers 33, (see Figs. 3, 5, and 6,) the said levers being arranged in pairs, each of which having at one end lugs 37, provided with eyes 36, and at the other end with an opening 35, a straight portion terminating in a hook 34. This construction of the rubbingdrum and levers above described is supported by a shaft 29, having wings 31 and upwardly-projecting in- IOC this shaft 29 is formed heXagon 30 for conf nection with a handle-socket 44, in which an operating-handle is placed.

If it is desired, the handle portions 7 at the rear of the tube 1 may be dispensed with and a combined hinge 9 and handle 8 may be used, as shown at Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In operation the cover lO'is thrown back to the position shown in dotted lines at Fig. 1 and thel laundry to be operated upon placed in the bottom of the tub, together with a quantity of hot water. The cover 1() is now brought forward and latched in position by a downward movement of the latch-lever 16. The handle 45 is given a back-and-forward movement, causing the rubbing-drum to oscillate, turning, rubbing, and reversing the position of the laundry until thoroughly cleansed.

By lmeans of the construction of the rubbing-drum large or small quantities of laundry maybe operated upon, the rubbers 2O 21 being held in contact with the material by the action of the springs 46 and levers 33, the one set acting independent of the other and will permit the said rubbers to assume any position to accommodate themselves to the varying positions of the laundry.

Various slight modifications and changes may be made in thc details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a washing-machine, the combination' consisting of the tub 1, the hinged top or cover 10, a shaft 29 mounted on said cover, means for gi\v'ingsaid shaft a rotatable movement, the wings 31 integral with said shaft, levers mounted upon the top of said wings, flexible bands 25 attached to said levers, and suitable springs 46 for placing a tension on the same, as described.'

2. In a washing-machine, the combination consisting of the tub, semicircularin form, and suitably mounted on legs, the hinged cover 10 provided with a latch or lock and an opening at the top, the shaft 29 mounted in bearings attached to said hinged cover, suitable rubbers arranged in the bottom of the tub, a flexible rubbing-drum mounted on said shaft, the said rubbing-drum being provided with rubbers controlled by spring-actuated levers, and attached to flexible bands 25, all arranged and combined, substantially as and'for the purpose described.
