STOP AND WASTE COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,260, datedJune '7, 1904;.
Application filed \opril 11, 1902.
.To all whom if; may concern.-
Be it known thatI, CHARLES A. S'roNn,a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop and Waste Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stop-valvesfor stop and waste cocks, and designed especially to be used in connection with Water pipes or mains.
My invention consists in forming the plug 5 of the cock with astop-arm cast integral or formed integral with the plug and adapted to be extended, so as to engage with the stops on the stop-cock casing.
The object of my invention is to provide a stop-cock strong and efficientin construction,
economic in cost, and one wherein the stopcock arm m'ay be cast integral and not interfere with the grinding or fitting of the plug while it is being ground within its seat within 5 the casing.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cock constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the valve-plug removed, and Fig. 3 is a simi- 3 lar view of the removable extension of the valve-plug arm.
A represents the stop-cock casing provided with the usual water and waste Ways and the tapered seat for the plug-valve.
B represents the plug-valve, which is fitted to the seat of the casing A in the usual manner and secured within the said seat. The plug B is first turned down to approximate form, so as to fit the seat in the casing A; but 4 inasmuch as it is essential that the plug B must fit the seat in the casing fluid-tight it is necessary that the plug be ground within said seat,'and this operation necessitates the revolving of the plug B within the seat until the parts are snugly ground together, a grind ing material, such as fine emery andoil, being employed for this purpose.v
Serial No. 102,416. (No model.)
In stop-cocks constructed in the ordinary manner the casing Ais provided with stops 6 b at the upper end or near the neck of the plug B. The stops 6 b are engaged by an arm B which extends from a cap-piece provided on the plugvalve and engages between the stops 1) 7), thus limiting the rotation of the plugB within the casing A to designate when the cock is opened for free flow and closed with the waste-aperture opened. It is usual in constructions of this kind to make the cap B separate from the plug-valve, so that the said plug-valve B may be easily turned and ground without having the arm B interfere with said operation, and in these cases the cap B with the arm B is removed from the plug B, being replaced after the parts are fitted.
The function of the cap B is to receive a wrench, and for this purpose the said cap is formed with polygonal recesses or extensions adapted to fit, respectively, the plug at its neck portion and to be engaged by a handle or wrench, so as to turn said plug. Attempts have been made to cast the arm B integral with the plug Band to also cast the cap-piece B integral with said plug; but the constructions heretofore produced have been either expensive to manufacture or have failed on account of not having sufficient strength.
In order to obviate both diificulties and at the same time produce a cheap and efiicient construction, I form the plug B with a head B complete, so as to receive a handle or Wrench C, and also with an arm B extending out from said head B to one side thereof, all these parts being cast or formed integral. In forming the arm B I prefer to cast the same out at approximately right angles to the cap or head B and provide the same with an arm 1 and an arm 2, the latter extending slightly downward, with its lower end clearing the upper portion of the casingA and the stops 1) 7/, thus allowing the plug B to be turned completely Within its seat for the purpose of grinding the same. The extension 2, however, may be dispensed with, thus bringing the arm 1 down close to the upper surface of the casing A and in such a manner as to clear said casing and the stop Z) 6. After the plug B has been ground to its seat I provide an extension 3, which depends from the arm A in such a manner as to engage either of the stops I) b. This extension is shown in Fig. 1 in position, in Fig. 2 removed, and in elevation in Fig. 8. In these cases it is set forth as being screwthrcaded externally at one end for the purpose of engaging an internal screw-thread formed in the arm B This manner of attaching the extension, however, is not essential, as it may be attached in any other suitable manner designed to hold the parts firmly to gether.
By the above constructionI have provided a stop-cock having all the essential features of an eificient stop-cock with greater strength and at .a cost far beneath the usual cost of such type of cocks and one which may be easily assembled and reground if found necessary.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with the valve-casing provided with stops spaced apart, of the plug, an outwardly-projccting arm secured to said plug, said arm having an extension extending at right angles thereto, and integral therewith,
the lower face of said extension extending above said steps so as to pass the same without contacting therewith, and a'second extension of substantially the same size as said firstnamed extension secured to the latter, and adapted for engagement with said step, the upper face of the second extension being in abutting engagement with the lower face of the first-named extension, whereby any pressure on the former will be taken up by the under face of the latter.
2. In combination with the valve-casing and stops carried thereby, a plug having an arm formed integral therewith and extending above the steps so as to pass the-same without contacting therewith, and a removable extension carried by said arm for engagement with said stops, said extension being secured to the under side of the arm, means for securing said extension, said means extendinginto said arm, the upper face of the second extension being in abutting engagement with the lower face of the first-named extension, whereby any pressure on the former will be taken up by the under face of the latter.
3. In combination with the valve casing formed with stops and the plug mounted therein, an arm secured to said plug, said arm at its outer end forming a downwardly-protruding extension secured thereto, said extension being screw-threaded, and a removable extension of approximately the same size as said first-named extension carrying a screwthreaded portion for engagement with said threaded portion of the extension, the upper face of said removable extension being in abutting engagement with the under face of said first-named extension.
, Signed at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, this 7th day of April,
CHARLES A. STONE. Witnesses:
