To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a valve.
One of the objects of the present inven-` tallic valve seat, together with means for securing it within the casing. Further ob-l jects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompany-l ing drawings, in which-v A Figure 1 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section through the valve.
Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, cross section of same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings i-n detail, A indicates a valve casing, 2 the valve proper, 3 the stem, and 4 the spout of the valve. Formed interiorly of the casing is a longitudinally extending passage, one end of which is enlarged, as at 5, to permit the insertion of a non-metallic member 6. such as shown. The opposite end of the passage is contracted, as at 7, and communicates with a threaded extension 8 which permits the valve casing to be screwed on the end of a pipe or other suitable fitting.
Formed on the inner end of the non-metallic member is a seat 9.; with which the valve 2 is adapted to engage, and formed in the housing ony the opposite side of the valve is a seat 10. The valve proper is preferably spherical as here shown and is provided with a central passage 11 and a recess 12 to permit it to be turned by means of the valve stem 3; the lower end of the valve Specification of Letters Patent.

stem being provided with a square eXtension 13 which enters the recess, thus per-y mltting the valve and stem to be made inl two separate parts and also permitting turning movement of the stem to be transmitted to the valve. The stem otherwise extends through the threaded projection 14 of the casing, on the upper end of which is formed a seat 15.
Interposed between the seat 15 and a `sec ond seat 16 formed on a collar 17 on the stem is a spherical packing member 18. That is, any liquid which might pass by the seat 10 in the valve 2 might leak up around the stem and out through the cap 19 which incloses it. However, this is prevented in the present instance as the spherical packing 18 employed tightly engages the seats 15 and 16, due to the pressure exerted by the screw cap 19. This spherical packing member is preferably constructed of a nonmetallic material, such as vulcanized` rubber, ber, or the like, and although it is subj ect to comparatively little wear it is obvious that any that might take place may be taken care of by merely tightening the screw cap 19.
The non-metallic member 6, of which the valve seat 9 is formed, is secured in position by means of a spout 4. The inner end of the spout is provided with an extension 20 which fits a central passage 21 formed in the member 6. A washer 22 surrounding the extension 20 and interposed between the spout and the member 6 prevents leakage of any water that might tend to escape between the valve casing and the member 6 and it also serves as a means for forcing the non-metallic member, upon which the seat is formed, against the spherical valve; pressure for this purpose being obtained by providing a screw cap 23. This screw cap engages an annular shoulder 24 formed on the spout and will, therefore, when tightened, force the spout inwardly against the gasket 22 and the member, thus expanding the gasket and simultaneously forcing the member 6 against the valve 2 and preventing any leakage even though wear should take place. The screw cap 23 also has the function of permitting the spout to be turned in any direction desired and locks it when thus adjusted by merely tightening the cap. The member 6, while preferably constructed of vulcanized rubber or liber, may be constructed of metal, ift desired, but actual practice has shown that practically no Wear takes place between the metallic valve 2 and the non-metallic member 6 even though considerable grit is carried bv the Water. The materia-ls and finish ot` the other parts olf the valve may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer dictate.

A valve comprising a casing having a central longitudinal passage formed therein, one end of said passage being enlarged and having a valve seat formed at its inner end, a spherical valve Within the enlarged portion of the passage, engageable with the seat, a packing member insertible in the passage, having a valve seat formed on its inner end, engageable with the spherical valve, a central passage formed in the packing member, the outer end of said passage being enlarged, a spout insertible in the passage, said spout having an extension formed on its inner end, adapted to be received in the enlarged portion of the passage :formed in the packing member, means for exerting an endwise pressure on the spout and through the spout against the packing member and the spherical valve, a central passage formed in the valve, means for transmitting a turning movement to the valve t0 bring the said passage into or out of alinement with the main central passage formed in the casing, and a resilient packing member surrounding the reduced portion of the spout and interposed between the spout and the irst named packing member.
