Letters Patent No. 76,219, dated .March 31, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHOD 0F CREATING DRAUGHT IN CHIMNEYS BY MEANS 0I STEAM. I
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known` that I, WILLIAM II. MARTIN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county ot' Kings, and State of New York, have invented Certain new and usefulImprovementsin the Method of Creatingpraught in Chimneys by Means of a Blast of Steam; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of' this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a plain elevation, and i Figure 2 a vertical section ot' a common smoke-pipe or chimney with m'y Aimprovement applied thereto, and
Figures 3, 4, and 5 are detailed parts of my invention, to be hereinafter described, l
It has long been the practice to introducenu jet of steam in the smoke-stack er chimney of assteam-boilcr to increase the draught of the furnace, but the application, so far as I am informed, has hitherto been so imperfectly made that the best attainable result has not been accomplished.
The object of my improvement, therefore,l is to more eeetually and equally apply the blast of steam in theA chimney or smoke-stack, to secure, if possible, the maximum advantage of its application.
This object I accomplish by delivering the stealnthrengh an orifice, or what I style a blast-head, constructed substantially in the following manner and form; that is to say, Iirst make a cup of the form substam tiallyas shown by a; into this cup I screw a hub, ln'with a. {iange or disk, c, made thereon, and with a hole, d, drilled in the axis thereof, to meet'similar holes, c e e, drilled transversely therein, through which the steam is to pass. The flange c is made a little less in diameter than the inside diameter of the top of the cup, leaving an opening all around the flange, between it and the cup, through which the steam is forced in a. circular volume up the chimney, carrying the air above it, and indiicing a draught through the furnace below.
Fig. 5 shows a plane elevation of the hub and llange, and thc transverse holes c e in perspective, and iig. 4
shows an inverted view of the said hub, with the hole in the centre, and the transverse holes in dotted lines,
and fig. 3 shows a top view of the chimney or smoke-stack, and the manner in which the blast-head is secured therein, said blast-head being attached to a steam-pipe,f, leading to the boiler, from whence the steam is drawn to create the blast, and consequent draught in the furnace. I
Having now described the nature and c xteiitcf my improvement, I claim- In combination with asmoke-stack or chimney, the blast-head a, constructed substantially as described, so as to deliver the steam'in said stack in a circular volume or volumes,- substantially as set forth.
WM. H; MARTIN.
