HAIR-Pm.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,122, dated June 7, 1904.
Application led September 30, 1903. Serial No. 175,116. (No model) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HEFFLAND BIGE- LOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hair-pins, and has for its object to provide a hair-pin that Will be effective to support the hair, one that will not slip from its place, and also one that is provided with means for readily and quickly removing` the same from the hair.
To these ends my invention consists of a hair-pin comprising sidemembers, the upper end of the pin being curved or bent to I'orm a iinger-hold whereby ready removal of the hair-pin may be effected.
It consists further of a hair-pin comprising side members united at the top, one side member being provided with an inward crimp and the other member being provided with an inward bend above or overlapping the crimp in the opposite member.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and operation of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of one form of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation or' the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of another form. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
In carrying out my invention I generally use a single piece of'wire A doubled to form the side members a ce, which diverge to about their center. One member is then provided with an inward crimp, as shown in Fig. 1 at a', and the other member with an inward bend a". From these points they again diverge to their extreme lower ends.
The upper end of the hair-pin is bent forwardly either at a short angle or by curving the same, and thus forms a hook or finger-hold a3 whereby the hair pins can be readily and quickly removed from the hair at all times.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one side member may be provided with an inward crimp a and the other side member with a bend projecting toward the crimp, and said bend may be an angular or curved one. The crimps may also be either rentrant angles or curves. Furthermore, the bend may be opposite thc inward crimp, or it may be above and overlap the same. In all forms, however, the upper end of the hair-pin is bent over or forwardly to Jform the hook or Iinger-hold a3.
By 'forming hair-pins as shown herein they can be easily inserted and will hold the hair securely in place. The pins can also, by means ot' the hook or linger-hold a3, be easily and quickly removed when desired. The bend overlapping the crimp o', oers only slight resistance on entering the hair, while its holding power coupled with said crimp is very great. The finger-hold or hook at the top, besides assisting in holding it in place, makes the removal of the hair-pin easier.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hair-pin comprising a singlepiece of vwire doubled to form a loop and diverging sides, one of said sides having an inwardly-projecting crimp, and the other side having an inward bend overlapping the crimp on the opposite side, and diverging guiding-fingers below the crimp and bend.
2. A hair-pin consisting of a single piece of wire doubled to form a loop at its upper end and diverging side members, the upper portion of the loop bent outwardly to form a finger-hold, one of the side members having an inwardly-projecting crimp, and the other side member having an inward bend, the point of said bend overlapping the crimp of the opposite member, and diverging guiding-fingers below the crimp and bend.
