PENOIL SHARPENER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 29, 1903.

PATENT OFFICE.
PENClL-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,077, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed December 29, 1903. Serial No. 186,95l. (No model.;
To all whom, it may concern.-
. the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a pencil-sharpener formed of a blade having an internal cutting edge adapted to have the pencil drawn against the same and so sharpened, While said edge is of such nature as to make a long or short cut of the wood of the pencil, and a handle which is adapted to cover said internal cutting edge as a guard, the outer side of said blade being blunt and extending beyond the sides of the handle so as to be capable of being grasped without cutting the fingers while the blade is moved into and out of said handle.
Figures 1 and 2 represent plan views of a pencil-sharpener embodying my invention in respectively open and closed conditions. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section on line a; m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the sharpener shown in Fig. 2 'in folded con dition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a blade which has an opening B therein, the edge or wall thereof being beveled, as at G, from one side of the blade to the other, whereby it is sharp and adapted to have a pencil drawn against the same and accordingly cut, it being evident that as the pencil is presented to either side of the blade, the bevel being on one side only, the opposite side being parallel with the longitudinal sides of the blade or unbeveled, as most plainly shown in'Fig. 3, a longer or shorter cut of the pencil may be accomplished.
D designates a handle to which one edge of said blade is pivoted, as at E, and within which it may be folded, as in Fig. 2. On the sides of the handle are the file surfaces F for pointing the pencil as primarily cut by the edge (1. The side edges of the blade are blunt, as at H, and the handle is narrower than the blade,whereby the device is reduced in weight and size,while the interior cutting edge of said blade is covered by said handle as a guard. It may behandled,carr ied in the pocket, aschoolbag, &c. without liability of its edge H cutting anything with which it may contact.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited ineach case to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. -A pencil-sharpener comprising an apertured blade having a non-cutting periphery and an interior cutting edge and a handle of less width than said blade and adapted to cover the aperture therein, said blade and said handle being pivotally connected at their ends.
2. A pencil-sharpener comprising an apertured blade having a non-cutting periphery and an interior cutting edge and a handle of less width than said blade and adapted to cover the aperture therein, said blade and said handle being pivotall y connected at their ends, said handle having an abrading-surface.
