I prefer in practicetoconstruct the instru-v ment wltll a single conncctlng'tube between two separate-levels, as described and shown lO according to the elevation of' "9o by Fig. 4; but, if desired, the same principle may be carried out by arranging two vertical glass tubes transversely in the ends of a long pole D and connecting said tubes by means ot' two longitudinal tubes Z Z, arranged in suitable grooves in said pole AD and inclined from the outer edge of thel center of the pole inward toward each end, so that when either ltube l cornes uppermost .the water will flow out of it toward each end into the transverse glass tubes and the bottom longitudinal tube. By thus having two levels and arranging them at the ends of a long pole it does not matter whether the pole is straight or not, vas the leveling is established by the height of the end rather than by the straight-` ness of the pole or bar in which the glass tube is placed when only one tube is used. In view yot' the above 1 reserve the right to use either one or two Huid-connecting tubes between the glass tubes and to make such other modilications in the construction as circumstances may require in practice.
Having now described my invention, what l claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A leveling instrument comprising in combination two separate levels, each consisting of a slotted metal outer tube h'avinga base and head secured to opposite ends thereof,- a plug screwed intoA the bottom. end of said metal tube, a glass tube arranged4v insaid 2.1m a leveling instrument, the combination of two glass tubes e e, and means for holding them in position, comprising the slotted, metal tubes a, their bases b, heads d and plugs c, with elastic cases f, attached to the upper ends of said glass tubes, caps g, arranged over said elastic cases and flexiblev tube C, connecting one glass tube with the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
