CHARLES F. PAUL, OF LINTON, ILLNOIS.
WATER-GAGE.
To all whom it may c'rmcern:4
Be it. known that L'CHARLES F. PAUL, a citizen' of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Water-Gages, of which the following is avspecication.
This invention relates to a compound safety water gage intended :for use on locomotive `andstationary boilers.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawings iigure l is a side elevation of a water gage embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectiouot Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation ofthe upper half of the gage. F ig. l is a sectional view of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are horizontal sections taken on the planes indicated by the dotted lines 5-5 and .t3-6, respectively, of F ig. 3.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the gage comprises an inner glass tube l and an outer glass tube 2 which surrounds the inner tube and is of suliiciently larger diameter to pro.
vide the concentric space 3 therebetween. The outer tube is incased in the metallic cylindrical casing 4 provided with four or more longitudinal openings 5. The casing el. is cxteriorly threaded at opposite ends, at G and 7, for a screwed engagementwith the interiorly threaded portions 8 of the caos 9. The caps 9 are provided with the inteiiorly threaded outer portions l() which are ,preferably of hexagonal form to 'facilitate the use of awrench or other tool in screwing the caps in place. I. l
Packing rings or gaskets 10 are arranged between the ends of the metallic casing and shoulders l1 formed on the caps to `provide a water tight joint between the caps, casing and outer tube. The ends oi the inner tube project beyond thatI ci?.
the outer tube and pass through correspond l -ing apertures 12 in partitions 13 in the caps,
whereby the inner tube is securely held in a central position. rihe interiorly threaded Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, i912.
Application filed October 14, 1911. Serial No. 6542,?1'0.
portion 10 of the bottom cap of the gage is intended to screw on the botto-m water cock of the boiler, a packing ring 14;, being disposed around the lower end of the inner tube to'provide a water tight connection.V vThe lower exteriorly threaded end 15 ot= the hollow coupling sleeve 16 screws in the interorly threaded portion of the top or upper cap of the gage against the packing ring 17. The upper end of the sleeve is also ex 7 terxorly threaded, as at 18, for a screwed connection with the steam pipe from the' connection with the drawings, it is thoughtthatrthe construction and advantages otthis invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions andniino-r details of Vconstruction may be` resorted to without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the ad# vantages ot this invention as defined in the appended claim.
cap of the gage against the packing ring"- Having described my invention, Whatf claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :M
A water gage of the class described comn f prising au inner glass tube, a second tube of.
1xarger diameter surrounding the inner tube, a metallic casing' provided with a piurality of longitudinal openings, incasing the outer tube, caps provided with interiorly threaded cylindrical inner portions formed with annular interior shoulders and interiorly threaded reduced hexagonal outer portions, screwing on the ends of the casing, packing rings between the shoulders ot' the caps and the ends of the casing, packing rings around the ends oi' the inner tube, perforated partitions formed in the caps for the reception of the ends ot the inner tube whereby the i' l 2 f 1,032,766
