SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,028, dated June 7, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST DENNIS, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to monkeywrenches, and relates in particular to that class of monkey-wrenches in which the sliding jaw is sustained in any position in which.
it may be adjusted on the shank by means of a spring-dog onthe sliding member.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide the shank of the wrench with two racks, one on each edge, and I arrange on the sliding jaw two pivoted dogs, one at each end and each having a spring by which it is pressed toward the rack, with which it engages. In my improved wrench therefore the sliding jaw is held in position by two independent dogs, each taking into an independent rack, whereby the sliding member is held in this position more strongly than where but a single dog is employed and the danger of stripping the rack, which is incurred where only one dog is used, is obviated.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench with the sliding member in section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sliding member detached from the wrench. Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective of one of the dogs.
In the several figures corresponding numerals of reference designate like parts, and 1 designates the shank of the wrench, formed with the usual stationary jaw 2 and with racks 3 4 on its front and rear edges.
5 indicates the sliding member of the wrench, which has a projecting jaw 6 and is slotted for the reception of the shank 1. A recess 7 is formed in the back of the sliding member, in which recess seats the lug 8,
formed on a dog 9, said lug being pivotally secured in the recess by a pin 10. A socket 11 is formed in the back of the sliding jaw and receives a spiral spring 12, which bears against the upper end 13 of the dog 9, said upper end being vertically disposed while the dog is at an angle to the back of the sliding member. A straight dog 14, formed with a lug 15, is arranged at the front of the sliding member under the jaw 6 thereof, the lug 15 being seated in the recess 16 in the sliding member and pivotally secured therein by a pin 17. A spiral spring 18 is socketed in the recess 19 in the sliding member and bears against the upper end 20 of the dog 14. The dog 9 is formed with a laterally-projecting lug 21, that extends out beyond the side of the sliding member, and the dog 14 is provided with a similar lug 22, that also extends out beyond the same side of the sliding member as the lug 21 of the dog 9. Upon the side of the sliding member is arranged a plate 23, formed with two vertical slots 24 24, through which.

The plate 23 is formed with beveled lower corners 26, which when the plate is depressed engage with the lugs 21 22 of the dogs 9 and 14, and the said plate is formed with a laterally-projecting finger 27, by means of which the plate 13 may be moved up and down.
In operation the sliding member when in fixed position is held at any point to which it may be adjusted by the dogs 9 and 14, each of which engages, as shown, with one of the racks on the shank 1. When it is desired to adjust the sliding member so as to bring it closer to the stationary jaw 2, the sliding member is simply pushed along the shank, the dogs 9 and 14 riding over the upwardly-inclined teeth of the racks 3 and 4. hen it is desired to adjust the sliding member to a point farther away from the fixed jaw 2, the shank 1 is grasped in one hand 'and the plate 13 is drawn out by placing the thumb on the finger 27, the beveled corners 26 26 of the plate contacting with the lugs 21 22 of the dogs 9 and 14 and simultaneously spreading the lower ends of the dogs, so as to disengage them from the racks 3 4, when the-sliding member can be moved to the desired point, and upon releasing the pressure upon the finger 27 the springs of the sliding dogs will force the plate upwardly and the points of the dogs will catch in the teeth of the racks 3 4 and hold the sliding member at the desired point.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench, the combination with a shank having racks on both edges, of a sliding member having a dog pivotally secured to each end, said dogs having laterally-projecting lugs extending beyond the side of the sliding member, anda plate slidably mounted on the side of the sliding member and formed with a finger-piece, said plate being adapted to simultaneously engage the lugs of both dogs and press the dogs outwardly from the respective racks.
2. In a wrench, a shank having a rigid jaw at its outer end and teeth on its edge, a member slidably mounted on said shank and provided with a jaw, a dog pivoted to said slidable member to engage the teeth of the wrench- 2 5 shank, and provided on one edge with a laterally projecting lug, means for normally holding the said dog in engagement with said teeth, a slotted plate slidably mounted on the outer face of the slidable member and pro- 3 vided with a finger-piece, said plate movable longitudinally of the wrench-shank to engage the lug of the dog and disengage the latter from the teeth, substantially as described.
