PATENT OFFICE.
' FILE-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 761,997, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed August 11, 1903. Serial No. 169,117. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. RANDOLPH, a citizen of the United States, and a-re'sident of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to binders for files of Figure 1 is a top plan view of a file, showing'my invention inoperation; and Fig. 2 a view of the file when unbound and the outside flap thrown back to show its inner side partly cut away.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both views, A lndlcates a.
file-wrapperof ordinary construction, having secured thereto one end of a piece of tape B by pasting it to the inner side of the out- As shown in the drawings, a
side flap A. paper -fastener C, having a round head D, is then inserted through the fabric of the wrapper and the tapeand its prongs E bent fiat against the inside of the wrapper. A strip of tough paper or clothF is then pasted over the end of the tape and the ends of the paper-fastener and the wrapper is complete.
In operation the papers are placed in the wrapper A and the two flaps folded over them, the flap A being on the outside. The tape B is then carried around the file and given one or more turns under the button C.
Should at any time the fastenerC tear out, another one can be readily inserted through the wrapper and the ends bent against the outer surface of the strip of paper or cloth F. It'will also be apparent that any other button device than the head of a paper-fastener may be substituted and string or twine used instead of tape without departing from the spirit of my invention. I
If desired, the tape may be secured the full length of the wrapper where an especially strong binder is desired.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1.. In afile-binder, a piece of tape pasted on the inside of the wrapper, a paper-fastener passed through the wrapper and tape, adjacent to one edge thereof, and having its prongs bent against the tape andits head'on the out-, side of the wrapper, and a strip of fabric pasted over said tape and the prongs of the fastener, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a file-binder, a wrapper fabric, a piece of tape pasted on the inside of said wrapper fabric, a paper-fastener passed through said fabric and tape and having its prongs bent against the tape, a strip of fabric pasted over said tape and the prongs of the fastener, the head of said paper-fastener projecting from the outer surface of the wrapper fabric to receive the free end of the tape in binding a file, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOS. P. RANDOLPH.
