declare the following to be a full, clear, and

exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relatesto improvements indesks, and pertains more especially to a read ily-portable desk which can be placed upon or form the top of a stand or cabinet.

The object of this invention is to construct a desk of the character indicated which comprises a horizontally-arranged base forming the bottom of compartments for stationery and extending forwardly of the said compartments, two side pieces arranged at'or adjacent and extending along opposite side edges, respectively, ofthe said base, a back arranged along the rear edge of the base and extending between and connecting together the side pieces, a top located a suitable distance above 1 the rear portion of the base and provided at its forward edge with a forwardly and upwardly facing shoulder extending longitudinally of the top, an upwardly and rearwardly tiltable sectionforming a cover for the aforesaid compartments and extending forwardly from adjacent the back and forming the rear section of the writing-table of the desk, and another tiltable section having its axis arranged forward of the aforesaid compartments, and such an arrangement of the parts that the said last-mentioned tiltable section 1 shall bearer lean against the aforesaid shoulder or shall form a forward table-section having its upper surface flush'with the top surface of the rear table-section according as it is tilted upwardly and rearwardly against the" said shoulder or actuated into its other treme posltion.

With this object in view and tothe end of realizing other'advantages hereinafter apthe drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a desk embodying the said invention, and in this figure the forward tiltable section is in its table-forming position, whereas the rear table-forming and compartment cov'er-forming section is tilted upwardly to afford access to the compartments normally covered thereby. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the desk, and in this figure-both ti ltable sections are in their table forming D Si iQHs.

My improved desk, as already indicated, is readily portable and can be placed upon any stand or cabinet and may, in fact, form the top of a cabinet. The said desk, as shown in the drawings, comprises a horizontally-arranged base A, upon which are arranged twoable distance above the rear portion of the base A next forward of the said back. The top D extends along the back C between and connects together the sidesections B: The sides B, back C, and top D are secured in place'in any approved manner. The top D is provided at its forward edge with a forwardly and upwardly facing shoulder (Z, which "extends longitudinally and from end to end of the said top. "arranged next below the top D and between the sides B and supported in any approved manner.

Drawers E are preferably Forwardly and rearwardly extending compartments Gr are formed upon the base A between and a suitable distance from the rear and forward edges of the base, and a cover H for all of the said compartments in common is provided, which cover fits snugly but easily between the side sections B and is pivoted horizontally and widthwise of the desk to the rear portions of the said side sections between the back 0 and the aforesaid compartments.

Preferably the compartments G are arranged but a short distance forward of the back 0, and the pivotal connection between the cover H and the side sections B comprises, preferably, the following: Each side section B is provided at its inner side and within the comparatively narrow space formed between the rear end walls of the compartments G and the back 0 with a vertically-arranged cleat b, which is secured to the said side section in any approved manner and extends a short distance above the said cover, which is cut away, as at H, to accommodate the location of the said cleat, and each cleat b is provided with a circular hole 6, which is arranged horizontally and widthwise of the desk. The holes 6 of the cleats b of both side sections B are arranged in lineendwise and are conpivot 14, formed upon the wooden piece K,

which is secured to the cover H in any approved manner and preferably to the under side of the said cover, so as to be invisible from above the said cover. The lid or cover H is obviously, therefore, tiltable upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, to afford access to the compartments G, which are suitable for use as receptacles for stationery, &c.

The back C is recessed, as at C, at its forward side along and rearwardly of the rear edge of the said cover to accommodate the extension of the cover H into close proximity to the back C in the closed position of the said cover without obstructing the actuation of the said cover from its closed into its open position. The cover H in its normal and compartment-closing position rests upon the rear and forward walls of the compartments G, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4E, and constitutes the rear section of the writing-table of the desk, and the said walls are formed, preferably, by two bars J, which extend between the side sections B widthwise of the desk and are arranged a suitable distance apart. The rear bar J is arranged a short distance forwardly of and parallel with the back C, and the forward bar J is arranged next rearward of a recess a, which is formed in the upper side of the base A and extends widthwise of the desk between the side sections B. Bars L are arranged parallel with the side sections B at suitable intervals widthwise of the desk and extend between and connect together the bars J and form the side walls of the compartments G. The cover H projects forwardly of the forward bar J and is provided at its forward end with a depending ilange It, which extends longitudinally of and is separated a short distance from the forward side of the said bar J, and a spring P, which is suitably secured to the base A centrally between the ends of the said bar J, is arranged to bear against and frictionally engage the inner side of the flange /L in the closed and table-forming position of the cover H, and thereby acts to retain the said cover in its said position. As already indicated, the base A extends a suitable distance forwardly of the compartments G, and the lower portions of the side sections B also extend forwardly of the said compartments and forwardly of the recess a in the base A. The recess ft is arranged parallel with the back 0, and the forward side wall of the said recess is provided with an upwardlyfacing shoulder a, which extends longitudinally and from end to end of the said recess.

My improved desk comprises another tiltable or swinging section, B, which is arranged between the side sections B and is pivoted to the said sectionsB horizontally and widthwise of the desk, as at 1', over the recess R and forwardly of the cover H. The section R is capable of being swung, therefore, upwardly and rearwardl y or downwardly and forwardly between the side sections B, and the dimensions of the said section B and the arrangement of the parts are such that the said section R shall in its upwardly and rearwardl y tilted position bear against the shoulder (Z and closely overlap the shoulder a and close the space between the top 1) and the cover H from the front, as shown in Fig. 1, and in its oppositely-swung or lower position shall rest upon the forward portion of the base A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and form the forward section of the writing-table of the desk and be arranged flush with and adjoin the cover H, and the spring 1 exerts suflicient pressure against the flange or depending member h of the said cover to prevent lifting of the said cover by the section 1t should the latter in actuating it into its table-forming position slightly engage the forward edge of the aforesaid cover.

What I claim is 1. A desk comprising two upright side sections' B arranged a suitable distance apart widthwise of the desk; an upright back connecting the side sections together at the rear of the desk; a base A arranged under and between the side sections and extending for wardly of the side sections, which base is provided, in its upper side and between the forward ends of the side sections, with a recess (6 which extends widthwise of the desk and has its forward wall provided with an upwardlyfacing shoulder a which extends longitudinally of the said wall; a top arranged a suitable distance above the rear portion of the base and extending between the side sections; compartments formed between the side sections rearward of the aforesaid recess, a cover normally closing the compartments and forming the rear section of the writing-table of the desk, and a movable section having the dimensions and arrangement required to render it capable of leaning against the top and overlapping the aforesaidshoulder, or forming the forward section of the aforesaid table, according as it is actuated into the one or the other of its extreme positions.

2. A desk comprising two upright side sections arranged a suitable distance apart widthwise of the desk; an upright back connecting the rear ends of the side sections together; compartments formed between the lower portions of the side sections; a base forming the bottoms of the said compartments and extending forwardly of the compartments, which base is provided, in its upper side and forward of the said compartments, with a recess a which extends widthwise of the desk; a top arranged a suitable distance above the rear portion of the base; a cover normally closing the compartments and forming the rear section of the recess and forward of the aforesaid compart-.

ments and arranged to close the space between the top and the base from the front, which swinging section extends over the said recess and leans against the top, or formsthe forward section of the aforesaid table, according as it is swung into the one or into the other of its extreme positions.
