My invention relates to pin members or tongues intended for pivotal connection with breastpins, brooches,and analogous articles of personal wear and adornment, having for its purposes the customarily. sought ends in such structures, but more particularly cheapness and strength.

It has been common heretofore to bend and flatten the end of a cylindrical pin-blank to form the pin-head not only to decrease bulkiness, but to lessen cost of manufacture. The bending and flattening operation, however, weakens the tongue, particularly at those points where the greatest strains occur namely, both adjacent the shaft and across the head in alinement with the bearing. In such structures having a flat perforated head traversed by a pintle the extreme rearward swing of the pin-shaft shortly forces the free end of the hook from its original position, thereby allowing such play upon the pintle as to permit the shaft to fall of its own weight. In some cases the excessive swing of the shaft actually cracks the material of the head along its shortest radius.

My invention obviates the above weaknesses without increasing expense by the application to the pin-head of a cap, band, or housing of the structure hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- 1n Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary imperforate pin-tongue; Fig. 2, a like View of the Same with my new cap applied thereto;

Like reference-letters indicate like parts. My improved structure comprises the usual cylindrical shaft or stem A, pointed at one end and having is blunt opposite portion a bent back upon itself and flattened, forming firmly over the head C, practically envelop ing the whole. The head and its cap or housing is now pierced with a suitable tool to form a passage E for the pintle, into which hole a pivot-pin F is inserted.

Obviously the housing D need not completely envelop the head; but a metallic band D may be swaged thereon, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, it being primarily requisite that the portion 0 of the head be secured against any spring action or bending or other play, but rather be to all intents and purposes an integral head.

Having described my invention, what I claim is' 1. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a shaft, of a flat seamed head integral therewith, and fixed means upon the head for binding the seamed portion..

2. Inadevice of the character described, the combination with a shaft of a flat head provided with a seam, and fixed means upon the head for retaining the seam against opening.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft of flat hook-shaped head, and means upon the hook-shaped head for binding thehook member in rigid contact with the unbent head portion.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft of a flat hook-shaped head integral therewith, and means upon the hook-shaped head fer retaining the hook member against spring action.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with the shaft of a flat seamed head integral therewith and a housing upon the head for binding the seamed portion.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination With the shaft of a fiat hookshaped head integral therewith, and a housing upon the head for retaining the hook member against spring action.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft of a flat head provided with a seam, means upon the head to retain the seam against opening, and a pivot-pin traversing the head and retaining means.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination with the shaft of a flat head provided With a seam, means upon the head to retain the seam against opening, and means traversing the retaining means for pivoting the shaft.

9. In a device of the character described, the combination with the shaft of a Hat hookshaped head, means upon the head for retaining the hook member against spring action, and means traversing the retaining means and head for pivoting the shaft.
