TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONGERN:
Be it known that I, I. S. EASTMAN, of Madison, in the county ot Dane, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotating Fans; and I do hereby declare -the following to he a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention.
Figure 2l is a transverse section on line e c.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts in both ot' the drawingsav My invention relates to an improvement in that-class of rotating fans that is operated by a system of geared wheels; and the nature of my improvement consists in a no vel device, so constructed as to be capable of vertical adjustment jointly with the rotating motion thereof, whereby the samemay be raised or lowered to any required height; and the object of myinvention is to drive mosquitoes or lies from a bed or table.
To-enable others skilled in the art to make and use, my invention,I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. l
represents the case holding the gearing which operates or rotatesthe fans. VSaid case is attached to the webbing above, but as the same forms no part of' the present invention, it is not necessary to be herein particularly described. B represents a vertical shaft, which is suspended from said case, and so arranged as to communicate with the gearing thereof. SuspendedA from said shaft B are two or more hollow cylinders or sections of shafts C 'and C, so attached as to be'capable of vertical adjustment. Saidrshatts may be as represented in the drawings, or may he of iluted tubi-ng, or may be-construeted in any manner that will insure the same to rotate with shaft I3. Attached to'the lowerend ot' cylinder C is a cord, E, which'passes' upward within said cylinder, and around or over a pulley, D, wit-hin the lower 'end of shaft B, thence downward through clasp F, which is attached to the lower end of said cylinder C. Said clasp is so shaped as to allow cord E to move easily when in the centre of the cylinder, but as the same is thrown to the side it comes in Contact with er against and between the sides of the clasp, thus firmly holding the same at any ploperlya.ljusted height. `Attached to the lower end of cylinder C is a system of arms, l, 2, 3, more or less, so arranged as to be capable of lateral adjustment. -To the outer ends ot'vsaid arms are attached fans, or crimped paper, or any suitable devicesthat will produce the required circulation of air as the same is rotated. i
My invention may be suspended over a bed to prot-ect a person from mosquitoes, or may ,be suspended over a table to keep the lies therefrom, and is, operated as follows, the same being properly adjusted: Shaft B is rotated by means-of the gearing, (which may be operated by weights, springs, or otherwise.) Cylinders and C of shaft I3 communicate with the fans by means of arms l, 2, 3, giving the same a rotating motion, whereby acirculation of air is obtained.' l
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire te secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the rotating shaft B, cylinders O and C, suspended from the ceiling above, and provided with arms I, 2,' 3, so arranged as to be held at any adjust-ed height by means of cord E and clasp iF, substantially as and for the purpose described.
I. s. EASTMAN.
