Description

, to the exact shape of the bell, so long as the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. G. CONE, OF EAST HAMPTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED SLEIGH-BELL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 76,163, dated March 31, 1868.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZRA G. CONE, of East Hamptoinin the county ofMiddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central section of a sleigh bell constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a diminished external view of the same.
This invention consists in the combination, with two separate openmouthed bells, of one or more detached or loose jingles or clappers, whereby I am enabled to produce a bell for sleighs and other purposes of a much more musical character than those heretofore constructed.
A and B represent the two bells. In the present instance A is of the gong shape and B of the ordinary house-bell shape; but I will remark that the invention is not limited bells used in my combination are openmouthed. The two bells are secured together by a rod, C, passing centrally from the one bell to the other, its ends being secured to the respective bells A B, and a throat, a, being left between the mouths of the two bells to insure a proper and unimpeded vibration of sound from each bell. Vithin the two bells loose or detached jingles b b (one or more) are placed, which, when the bells are shaken, strike the said bells and produce a harmony of sounds.
I will remark that great advantage arises f1 om having the jingles detached, so as to lie loosely within the combined bell A B, for the reason that a far more musical sound is produced. To explain: If the jingles were attached in any way permanently, the bell would be likely to assume, immediately after the shaking ceased, a position which would cause the jingles to rest against the bells, and
thus efiectually deaden the vibration of sound; but where loose jingles are used one of the bells A B must always give out a full, clear sound and no hinderance to the vibration be presented.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the two openmouthed bells A B, of one or more loose 'or detached jingles, b, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
The above specification of my invention signed my me this 24th day of July, 1867.
E. G. CONE.
